Chapter 49 - The Truth Behind the Waves

Julian froze, his weapon aimed squarely at his uncle’s chest, his breathing halting in his throat. "Uncle Victor... Father took the blame for your maritime smuggling. You let him rot in prison."

Victor Vance smiled, a cold, predatory smirk that mirrored Daniel’s arrogance, but carried the weight of real, lethal power. "Your father was weak, Julian. He thought honor could buy ships and pay off dockworker unions. Valerie understood the new world. We engineered the offshore crash, we bled Montgomery Holdings, and we were five minutes away from transferring the final tranche of seventy million into our private accounts before your little white-gowned bride started playing soldier."

Victor took a step onto the rain-lashed terrace, his heavy shotgun never wavering from my chest. Beside him, a second operative in black combat gear covered the narrow walkway leading down to the lower cliff path.

"Drop the carbine, Julian," Victor commanded softly. "Or Serena’s brains become modern art across that ivory balustrade. Daniel failed because he cared about humiliating her. I don't care about humiliation. I care about the ledger."

Julian’s knuckles whitened against the grip of his rifle. His eyes darted to mine, measuring angles, calculating the lethality of the room. He had a clean headshot, but Victor’s finger was already curled against a hair-trigger on a combat shotgun. At this distance, even a dying reflex would blow me off the terrace edge.

"Julian," I said calmly, stepping forward so that my body directly shielded Valerie, who crouched shivering against the stone railing behind me. "Lower the weapon."

"Serena, no—" Julian began.

"Lower it," I commanded, my voice carrying the absolute authority of a woman who had already died a hundred deaths since that makeup bottle was poured over her head.

Julian slowly knelt, resting the black carbine on the wet stone, then stood with his hands raised, his eyes burning with lethal intent.

Victor laughed, a low, rasping rumble. "Good boy. Now, Serena, the smartwatch. You’re going to scan your retina, you’re going to release the escrow hold, and you’re going to authorize the wire transfer to the Panama maritime trust."

"And if I do?" I asked, rain plastering the white fabric of my gown against the ceramic armor. "You execute us both and throw our bodies into the reef?"

"Of course," Victor replied without a shred of hesitation. "Did you really think there was a version of tonight where you walked away to wear another diamond necklace? The Montgomerys are finished. The Vance name will rise from the ashes of Harbor House."

"You made one mistake, Victor," I said quietly, tapping the glass of my smartwatch with a calm, rhythmic double-click.

Victor’s eyes narrowed. "What mistake?"

May you like

"You assumed Julian was the only Vance who knew how to plant a trap."
