Chapter 28 - The Public Reckoning

By two in the afternoon, the grand ballroom of the Vance Tower was packed to near capacity. Over two hundred journalists, flashing flashbulbs, and television camera crews were squeezed into the opulent hall beneath crystal chandeliers.

The whispers in the room were deafening. Reputations, fortunes, and the fall of the Vance dynasty were on trial before the public eye.

Backstage, in the very dressing wing where Daniel had once paraded his mistress before the gala, I stood in front of a full-length mirror. Beside me hung the ruined ivory gown—stained with that dark, hardened foundation, untouched, uncleaned, preserved exactly as it had been on the night my life was shattered.

"You don't have to display that, Serena," Julian said quietly, standing behind me in a bespoke charcoal suit. "You've already won in the courts. You don't owe them this piece of your pain."

"I don't display it out of pain, Julian," I said, running my fingers over the stiff, discolored silk. "I display it as armor. They tried to use my humiliation to silence me. Today, I use it to finish them."

The stage doors opened.

As I walked out onto the podium, the room exploded with blinding flashes and shouting reporters. Behind me, Julian’s team rolled out the glass display case containing the stained dress, mounting it directly beside the master podium.

The room abruptly hushed.

I adjusted the microphone, looking out over the sea of lenses and cynical faces without blinking.

"For the past twelve hours," I began, my voice amplified with crystal clarity through the state-of-the-art audio system, "certain factions loyal to the late Daniel Vance and Eleanor Kane have weaponized an eight-second clip of my humiliation in an attempt to delegitimize the work of Harbor House."

I pressed a button on the podium console.

The massive digital screens behind me illuminated—not with the leaked eight-second clip, but with the full, unedited seventeen-minute security footage recovered from Vivian Vance’s confiscated hard drives.

The ballroom gasped in horror.

On screen, Daniel wasn't just watching—he was explicitly outlining his plan to embezzle two hundred million dollars from pension funds, boasting to Eleanor about framing me for corporate espionage, while Vivian laughed behind the lens and the mistress poured the foundation on my dress to force me into signing a fraudulent divorce waiver under duress.

"That night," I spoke over the horrifying footage, my voice ringing with cold majesty, "they thought they poured foundation on a helpless victim. They thought they could bury a woman in mud and walk away with an empire built on stolen lives."

I turned to the screens, cutting the feed and replacing it with the certified legal documents bearing the federal court seal.

"As of eleven o'clock this morning," I announced, "Daniel Vance’s entire estate, Vance Maritime Holdings, and the private trusts of Eleanor Kane have been liquidated and transferred irrevocably into the Harbor House Foundation. Every single dollar stolen from the public, every property seized under their predatory lending, will be repurposed to shelter, educate, and empower the vulnerable."

Reporters frantically shouted questions, waving their hands in the air.

"Mrs. Vance—Serena! What will happen to the Vance Tower?" one reporter yelled above the din.

I smiled, looking directly into the primary network camera.

"The Vance Tower will be renamed the Harbor Sanctuary," I answered. "And the first renovation will begin on this floor. The makeup room where they poured that bottle of foundation will be demolished tomorrow morning—and replaced with a free legal aid clinic for domestic abuse survivors."

The ballroom erupted into spontaneous, thunderous applause.
