Chapter 25 - The Nursery Siege

"I know that your brother died in federal custody," I said, taking another calculated step forward, keeping my voice utterly level, willing her focus entirely on me so Julian could maneuver along the flanking bookshelf. "I know Eleanor was dragged into a concrete cell twenty minutes ago in chains. And I know you’re down to your last desperate gambit."
Vivian’s smirk tightened into a vicious snarl. "Daniel was an arrogant idiot who thought with his groin, and Eleanor was a dinosaur who believed in paper ledgers. But Marcus... Marcus understood leverage. The deeds to this entire harbor line weren't just in Eleanor's safe. The digital private keys that control the maritime shipping lanes—the ones Daniel used to smuggle seventy million in unregistered corporate bonds—are embedded in Harbor House's internal mainframe."
She gestured toward the tablet on the tripod with her weapon.
"In two minutes, those private keys transfer to my offshore wallet, and a thermite charge takes down this entire wing. The children? Just collateral damage to ensure I walked out without Julian Kane taking a shot."
"You won't get to the lawn, Vivian," Julian’s voice rang out from the periphery, cold, deep, and lethal. He stepped into the light, forty-five-degree angle from Vivian’s blind spot, his service weapon locked on her chest. "Drop the weapon. Step away from the terminal."
Vivian’s eyes twitched toward Julian. A flicker of panic broke through her haughty facade. "Shoot me, Julian, and the detonator in my pocket drops. The signal triggers automatically upon loss of pulse. We all burn together."
The silence in the nursery was deafening, broken only by the muffled whimpering of a child behind the heavy wood door.
"You're lying," I said softly.
Vivian glared at me. "Try me, Serena."
"You're Daniel's sister," I said, taking another half-step, closing the distance between us to less than eight feet. "You spent your entire life operating in the shadows because you're terrified of dying without money. You don't have a dead man's switch. You wouldn't risk your own skin for Marcus, for Daniel, or for anyone else. You're a narcissist, Vivian. And narcissists always leave an exit."
Before Vivian could process the accusation, I didn't reach for her gun. I lunged at the tripod, wrapping my fingers around the aluminum neck and smashing the entire unit downward into the hardwood floor.
"No!" Vivian screamed.
The tablet shattered against the timber, the screen splintering into spiderwebs of blue sparks as the upload terminated abruptly at eighty-nine percent.
In that split second of total distraction, Vivian snapped her pistol toward my chest. But Julian was faster.
A deafening crack echoed through the hallway. Julian didn't fire to kill—he fired a high-impact disarming round straight through Vivian's right shoulder. The impact spun her around violently, her gun flying from her grip and skittering across the floor into the shadows.
Vivian hit the wall with a sickening thud, clutching her bleeding shoulder and gasping in agony.
"Kids, inside! Lock the door!" I shouted. The two teenagers scrambled behind the heavy nursery door, and the interior deadbolt clicked shut with a resounding thud.
Julian was on Vivian in a heartbeat, his knee driving into her back as he wrenched her uninjured arm behind her, snapping heavy zip-ties around her wrists with merciless precision.
"Search her pockets," Julian commanded, breathing heavily.
I dropped to my knees, digging into the pockets of her tactical vest. I pulled out a black electronic fob with an illuminated blue diode—not a bomb detonator, but an encrypted encrypted remote wipe trigger for Harbor House's server banks.

"It's over, Vivian," I said, staring down into her contorted face.
Vivian spat blood onto the floor, glaring up at me with feral hatred. "You think destroying the tablet saves you, Serena? The second the network severed, a fail-safe ping went out. The international board... the silent consortium that backed Daniel from day one... they already know Harbor House is compromised. They won't stop until this place is leveled to the dirt."
