Chapter 16 - The Mistress's Gambit

The fallout from the ballroom confrontation exploded across every national headline by midnight. The Vance family’s private equity firm lost four hundred million dollars in market value within three hours of trading. Marcus Vance was taken into custody for federal money laundering, leaving Chloe isolated, disgraced, and stripped of the wealth that had once shielded her cruelty.

On Thursday morning, twenty-four hours before the eviction deadline was set to expire, Harbor House was quiet. The court injunction had been dismissed, and our funding had been restored tenfold by independent donors inspired by our defiance.

I was in my office overlooking the pier when Maya knocked softly.

"Serena... you need to see who is in the lower courtyard. She came on foot. She’s alone."

I walked to the window.

Standing beside the restored fountain in the cold, drizzling rain was Chloe Vance. She wore an oversized trench coat, her designer makeup smeared by tears and rain, shivering as Harbor House security kept their distance.

Julian stepped into my office, his phone still buzzing with press inquiries. He glanced out the window, his brow furrowing. "I'll have security escort her off the grounds immediately."

"Wait," I said, holding up a hand. "Look at her, Julian."

She wasn't holding a court order. She wasn't carrying a spray canister. In her hands, she clutched a small, water-damaged leather lockbox.

I walked down the grand staircase and stepped through the double doors onto the courtyard. The rain fell softly on my face, but I didn't reach for an umbrella.

Chloe looked up as my heels clicked on the wet stone. The arrogance that had defined her for years had vanished completely, replaced by a hollow, frantic terror.

"Serena," she choked out, her voice trembling. "Please. You have to listen to me."

"You have ten seconds to tell me why you shouldn't be arrested for trespassing, Chloe," I said, stopping three paces away.

Chloe dropped to her knees right on the wet gravel. Tears carved lines through the smeared foundation on her cheeks. "My father... he isn't the head of the syndicate. Neither was Daniel."

Julian arrived at my side, his eyes narrowing sharply. "What game are you playing, Chloe?"

"It’s not a game!" she sobbed, holding up the leather lockbox with trembling hands. "Daniel didn't run the offshore accounts alone. He was laundering for someone inside the State Supreme Court. The moment my father was arrested last night, someone broke into my apartment. They tore the walls apart looking for this. If I go to the police, they’ll kill me before I reach the precinct."

I stared at the woman who had once dragged me by my hair and tried to drown my dignity in foundation. Now, she was kneeling at the steps of the sanctuary she had tried to burn down, begging for her life.
