Chapter 54 - The Father's Bargain

Marcus Montgomery did not flinch. A faint, bitter shadow of a smile touched his lips, a look of profound recognition. "You have your mother's fury," he said softly, taking two slow steps forward until he stood less than five feet from me. "And you have earned every drop of that anger."

"Answer her," Julian stepped up beside me, his frame radiating lethal tension. "You’re standing on private property leased to Harbor House Holdings. The DNA cipher might clear you with the Pentagon, Mr. Montgomery, but around here, you answer to Serena."

Marcus’s eyes shifted to Julian, assessing him in half a second. "Julian Cross. Son of Admiral Arthur Cross. Your father was a good man. You've guarded my daughter better than I did. Stand down, Commander. I didn't come to wage war on my own blood."

Marcus turned his cane toward Daniel, who was shivering against the raw harbor breeze, his teeth chattering.

"Serena, look at him," Marcus said coldly. "Do you think I broke Daniel out of federal custody to give him back his freedom?"

"You signed an executive clearance order," I replied, crossing my arms. "Clara saw the logs."

"I signed an extradition order under the Maritime Security Directive of 1994," Marcus clarified, his voice dropping into a register of icy precision. "If Daniel remained in the county correctional system, Victor Vance’s remaining legal network would have had him poisoned before lunchtime. A dead Daniel takes the encrypted private keys to the offshore Vance accounts to the morgue. A living Daniel, held under sovereign maritime jurisdiction aboard my vessel, gives up every single dollar he stole from your mother’s estate."

Daniel lunged forward as far as his chains allowed, spitting blood on the wet timber of the dock. "Serena! He’s lying! He’s using you just like Victor used Valerie! He staged his death because the federal auditors were closing in on his shadow accounts in Zurich! Don’t let him take me aboard that ship—Serena, please! We were married for five years!"

I looked down at Daniel. There was no pity in my heart, no lingering warmth, only a profound disgust that I had ever allowed this coward to sleep in the same bed as me.

"You stood by while Valerie dragged me into that makeup room," I said, my voice dead calm. "You watched her ruin my dress, ruin my dignity, and you handed her my mother’s diamond pendant that very night. You don't get to invoke our marriage, Daniel. To me, you are nothing more than an unpaid invoice."

Daniel’s face twisted in terror as Marcus snapped his fingers. The two tactical guards shoved Daniel back toward the auxiliary holding bay near the stern of the yacht.

"Take him below," Marcus ordered without looking back. "Put him in solitary. No sunlight. Half rations until he inputs the primary decryption string."

As the guards dragged Daniel away, screaming curses that drowned in the tide, Marcus turned back to me. The harsh lines of his face softened, an exhaustion showing in his posture that no tailored coat could hide.

"I had to disappear, Serena," Marcus said quietly, the dock now silent save for the cry of the gulls. "When your mother died, I discovered that Vance wasn't just a corporate rival. He was running a cartel that had infiltrated the state supreme court, the banking commission, and the regulatory boards. If I had stayed, they would have used you as leverage. They would have killed you to force my hand."

"So you left me to be eaten by wolves instead?" I retorted, a single tear escaping my eye, hot against my freezing skin. "Do you have any idea what they did to me? What Valerie took from me?"

May you like

"I know every detail," Marcus said, his eyes darkening with an ancient, dangerous fury. "Every security tape. Every headline. Every dollar Valerie spent from your joint account. I built an armada while they thought I was fish food, Serena. And now, I have brought it home to give to you."
