Chapter 27 - The Velvet Trap

By daybreak, the storm had completely cleared, leaving behind a sky of crisp, crystalline sapphire. Sunlight flooded through the massive floor-to-ceiling windows of Harbor House, catching the polished mahogany floors and driving away the shadows of the violent night.
The media storm, however, was only beginning.
At eight o'clock in the morning, a rogue digital smear campaign erupted across social media platforms. Vivian’s automated fail-safe had indeed triggered: high-resolution clips of the private makeup room incident from that fateful night were leaked online simultaneously from dozens of offshore proxy accounts.
The internet was inundated with footage of Daniel sneering in his tuxedo, his mistress seizing me by my hair, and that thick, sickening stream of foundation being poured over my head as I fell to my knees. The captions were malicious and venomous, framed by Vivian’s network to depict Harbor House as a fraudulent charity funded by a disgraced, hysterical socialite clinging to her dead husband's coat-tails.
Clara burst into my office on the third floor, her face pale as she held up a tablet displaying millions of views and trending hashtags mocking my humiliation.
"Serena, they're tearing you apart online," Clara said, her voice shaking with anxiety. "Major donors are calling the front desk. Three corporate sponsors just threatened to freeze their monthly endowments. We have to issue a denial. We have to hire a crisis firm!"
I sat behind my grandfather’s antique walnut desk, looking at the freeze-frame on Clara's screen. There I was, on my knees in that white silk gown, eyes wide with shock, drenched in cosmetic sludge, looking broken, shattered, and pathetic.
For months, that memory had been a nightmare that woke me in cold sweats. It had been the wound that refused to close.
Now, as I looked at it in the clear morning light, after surviving firebombs, boardrooms, and armed sieges, I didn't feel shame. I felt power.
"No crisis firm," I said calmly, standing up and smoothing down the lapels of my tailored navy suit. "And we are not issuing a denial."
"Serena?" Clara blinked in confusion.
"Call a full international press conference," I commanded, my voice carrying the unshakeable weight of absolute authority. "Invite every major network, every financial beat reporter, and every social media outlet currently streaming that video. Book the grand ballroom at the Vance Tower in the city center."
"The Vance Tower?" Julian asked, stepping into the office with a stack of signed federal court orders in his hands. "Serena, that building was Daniel’s personal monument. Eleanor’s private boardroom is on the penthouse floor."

"Not anymore," I said, meeting Julian’s gaze with a sharp, brilliant smile. "Federal Marshals handed over the master keys an hour ago under Daniel's surviving spouse codicil. The Vance Tower belongs to Harbor House now. And it’s time we showed the world what happens when the woman you threw to the wolves comes back leading the pack."
Julian smiled—a slow, dangerous grin that mirrored my own resolve. "I'll have my security team sweep the ballroom. Let's give them a show they'll never forget."
