Chapter 15 - The Dinner with the Devil

The grand ballroom of the Bellevue Hotel gleamed with crystal chandeliers and the clinking of champagne flutes. The elite of the city—the old money families who had looked the other way when Daniel battered my spirit—were gathered in their black-tie finery.

When the double doors swung open, the room went dead silent.

I walked in alone.

I wasn't wearing the delicate ivory gowns Daniel had always forced me to wear to make me look fragile and obedient. I wore a backless, tailored scarlet jumpsuit cut like a blade, my hair pulled back into a sleek, high ponytail. Diamonds that I had bought with my own independent consulting fees flashed at my wrists.

Every head turned. Whispers rippled across the ballroom like wildfire.

Standing near the raised dais, holding a glass of vintage Dom Pérignon, was Chloe Vance.

She looked stunning in an emerald gown, but when her eyes met mine, a flicker of nervous hesitation broke through her polished smirk. Beside her stood Marcus Vance, the silver-haired patriarch whose hedge fund had secretly bankrolled Daniel’s private offshore accounts.

"Ms. Cole," Marcus Vance said, his voice smooth and condescending as I approached their VIP table. "I must commend your sheer audacity. Most women facing bankruptcy and an eviction order would be packing their bags."

"Most women haven't spent five years auditing criminal syndicates masquerading as private equity, Mr. Vance," I replied clearly, my voice carrying across the silent tables nearby.

Chloe stepped forward, her red lips curving into a venomous smile. "Did you like the paint on your steps, Serena? Consider it a down payment. You took Daniel from me, and you thought you could build your little rescue center on my father's property? You're a thief."

"I took nothing from you, Chloe," I said calmly. "Daniel gave you the crumbs of a broken empire because he knew you were naive enough to sign the liability guarantees on his shell companies."

Marcus Vance’s expression hardened. "Careful, young lady. You have forty-eight hours before Harbor House becomes private commercial real estate."

"Actually, Mr. Vance," Julian’s voice rang out from the rear of the ballroom, commanding the attention of the entire room.

Julian stepped forward, dressed in a tuxedo that made him look every inch the formidable titan he was. Beside him walked two uniformed officers from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, accompanied by a woman in handcuffs whose head was bowed in shame.

It was Daniel Cole’s former personal secretary.

Julian reached our table, handing Marcus Vance a thick, red-stamped federal subpoena. "Harbor Holdings LLC didn't buy the debt notes with clean money, Marcus. You used Daniel’s laundered offshore trust in Zurich. And thanks to Ms. Cole’s forensic audit of the records you left behind in the Delaware registry, the Department of Justice just issued an asset forfeiture warrant for every holding company in your portfolio."

Chloe dropped her champagne glass. It shattered across the marble floor, red wine splashing over the hem of her emerald gown like a stain that could never be washed away.
