Chapter 45 - Bloodline and Betrayal

The air in the library went utterly dead. Through the floorboards, I could feel the low, subterranean hum of the mansion’s industrial backup generators—and beneath them, the deep vaults where hundreds of gallons of diesel were stored to power the estate’s off-grid sea pumps.

Julian didn't hesitate. He racked the slide of his sidearm, the sharp metallic snap echoing through the room. "Step away from the desk, Valerie. You drop that switch and this room becomes your tomb."

"Oh, Julian Vance," Valerie laughed softly, turning her amused gaze toward the man at the door. "Still the loyal little soldier. Tell me, Serena, does your pet security commander know that his family’s shipping company didn't go bankrupt twelve years ago by accident? Did you tell him that our beloved father forged the maritime bills of lading that sent his father to federal prison?"

I kept my eyes fixed entirely on Valerie’s thumb, which rested millimeters above the red toggle switch. "Don't listen to her, Julian. She’s unraveling. She knows the transfers didn't go through."

Valerie’s smirk wavered for a fraction of a second. "What did you say?"

I took a slow, calculated step forward, my torn white dress dragging against the Persian rug. "You’ve been out of the country too long, Valerie. You think the Montgomery fortune is still tied to the old banking protocols. You hacked the wall safe, yes. You bypassed father’s twelve-year-old biometrics. But you didn't check the dual-authorization firewall I installed forty-eight hours ago when I seized Harbor House back from Daniel’s creditors."

I raised my left wrist, tapping the display of the encrypted smartwatch synced to Clara’s mobile console. On the screen, a red transfer progress bar was frozen at ninety-nine percent, locked behind a flashing alert icon: *SECONDARY SIGNATURE REQUIRED.*

"Seventy million dollars," I whispered, stepping within arm’s reach of the desk. "All waiting for a second digital handshake. Not Father’s fingerprint. Mine. Without my retinal scan, those bearer bonds don't transfer to your dummy accounts in Zurich. They divert automatically to an open escrow account controlled by the Federal Trade Commission’s fraud division."

Valerie’s jaw clenched, the aristocratic mask finally cracking to reveal the manic terror underneath. Her thumb twitched against the plastic casing of the detonator. "You’re bluffing. You wouldn't risk this house. You fought like an animal to take it back from Daniel!"

May you like

"I fought to take it back from parasites," I snapped, closing the distance between us until only the width of the mahogany desk separated our faces. "Daniel tried to humiliate me with cheap tricks and boardroom intimidation. But you... you are my own blood, and you chose to hide in the shadows while he dragged our name through the gutter. If Harbor House has to burn to stop you from robbing our family’s honor twice, then let it burn. Press the button, Valerie. Press it and let’s see who burns first."
