Chapter 52 - The Gavel and the Ghost

Dawn broke over the horizon, painting the gray Atlantic in brilliant ribbons of gold and rose. Through the shattered French doors, the ocean breeze was crisp, clean, and carrying the wild scent of salt and freedom. Harbor House stood scarred, bruised, its glass blown out and its lawns torn by gunfire, but its granite foundations remained unbroken.

I walked out onto the stone terrace, the cool dawn wind whipping the tattered hem of my gown. Julian followed, stepping up beside me at the balustrade, his shoulder brushing mine in quiet, unyielding solidarity.

"It’s over," he murmured, watching the sunrise ignite the mist over the harbor. "The syndicate is dismantled. Daniel is behind bars. Valerie will spend the next two decades answering to a federal judge. Montgomery Holdings belongs to you, Serena. Completely and entirely."

"No," I said, turning to face him, a faint, genuine smile touching my lips for the first time in weeks. "It doesn't belong to Montgomery Holdings anymore. It belongs to us. Harbor House is going to be what my father always wanted it to be—a sanctuary, not a fortress."

Clara emerged from the study, holding a secure satellite phone in her trembling hand. Her face was pale, all color drained from her lips, her eyes wide with uncharacteristic panic.

"Serena..." she whispered, her voice barely audible over the cry of the gulls wheeling above the cliffs.

Julian stiffened, his hand instinctively dropping toward his holster. "Clara, what is it? The perimeter is secure."

"It’s not the perimeter," Clara said, her voice shaking violently as she extended the receiver toward me. "The federal prison transport carrying Daniel just departed the county correctional hospital twenty minutes ago."

My heart skipped a beat, a cold premonition gripping my chest. "Did he try to escape?"

"No," Clara choked out, tears of disbelief welling in her eyes. "The transport never made it to the highway. It was intercepted at the harbor intersection. Not by mercenaries. Not by the syndicate."

"Then who?" I demanded, my fingers gripping the phone.

Clara swallowed hard, her eyes locking onto mine with sheer, unadulterated shock.

"The convoy was stopped by a motorcade flying the official seal of the Vance International Maritime Trust," Clara whispered. "And the man who signed the executive pardon order that just cleared the federal database... isn't Victor Vance. And it isn't Daniel."

May you like

Clara took a ragged breath.

"Serena... it’s your father. The signature matches Marcus Montgomery’s living DNA cipher—registered less than three minutes ago from a private yacht entering the harbor."
