Chapter 55 - The Uninvited Line

Before the torch operator could ignite the gas canister, a sharp, echoing crash resonated from the access hatch above.

A metal cannister rolled down the spiral stairs, bouncing against the iron rungs with a rhythmic clang. It landed on the floor between Arthur’s men and hissed violently, releasing a thick, blinding cloud of chemical white smoke.

"Tear gas! Move!" Arthur shouted, coughing violently as he stumbled back toward the stairs.

Gunshots shattered the quiet of the chamber—sharp, unsuppressed cracks that tore chunks of granite from the walls. Through the blinding fog, a silhouette rushed forward, tackling the armed operative to the floor with brutal momentum. The sound of bone meeting stone echoed over the roar of the venting smoke.

A hand gripped my wrist with desperate, iron strength.

"Ava! Down! Get behind the vault!"

The voice was rough, choked with smoke, but instantly recognizable.

*Richard.*

"What are you doing here?" I gasped, coughing as the acrid gas burned my throat. I ducked behind the curved steel body of the safe alongside Victoria.

Richard dropped down beside me, wearing a grease-stained utility jacket, his face smudged with soot and sweat. His eyes were wide, panicked, but completely locked on mine. In his left hand was a tactical radio tuned to the harbor police frequency.

"I’ve been following Arthur’s convoy since they cleared the private hangar," Richard panted, reloading a standard police service revolver he had clearly taken from someone outside. "For eight years, Ava, I was blind. I sat at our kitchen table, ignoring the quiet, ignoring the files you left, ignoring everything that truly mattered while I chased promotions. When I saw the empty shelf in the fridge that night... I knew I had destroyed our home. But I will be damned if I let your father destroy your life."

"Richard, he has armed mercenaries—"

"I didn't come alone," Richard interrupted, his voice steadying with grim resolve. "Listen."

From the top of the shaft came the shrill, unmistakable scream of emergency sirens, accompanied by the thundering beat of tactical helicopter rotors hovering directly over Pier 12.

"The federal port authority," Victoria whispered, an incredulous laugh breaking from her throat. "You called the feds?"

"I gave them Julian’s financial trail thirty minutes ago," Richard said, looking straight into my eyes. "Now open that safe, Ava. We need the original core registry before the water comes in!"
