Chapter 54 - The Architect’s Shadow

"Step away from the vault, Victoria," Arthur commanded, signaling one of his men. The operative raised his weapon, training the red laser sight directly onto the center of Victoria’s forehead.

Victoria slowly set her gun onto the wet rock and raised her hands, her jaw clenched tight.

"Dad," I said, stepping between the gunman and the safe, my voice trembling with a mixture of grief and fury. "Tell me this isn't true. Tell me Julian was lying."

Arthur sighed, taking a silver cigarette case from his pocket, tapping one against the lid, and lighting it. The blue smoke drifted toward the vaulted ceiling, mingling with the mist.

"Julian was a sentimental fool," Arthur said flatly. "He thought in terms of morality, justice, preservation. But the world doesn't run on sentiment, Ava. It runs on capital and momentum. When your grandfather built this harbor, post-war materials were scarce. If he hadn't compromised on the foundation mix, the Sterling Construction Company would have gone bankrupt before the pier was finished. We wouldn't have our empire. You wouldn't have gone to Oxford. You wouldn't be standing here as an internationally recognized architect."

"You built an empire on sand and deceit!" I shouted, the echo of my voice cracking against the stone. "The pier is failing! The new towers will cause a catastrophic structural collapse!"

"Which is why the consortium is taking ownership next Tuesday," Arthur replied coldly. "The insurance policies on the commercial sector alone exceed nine hundred million dollars. Once the papers are signed in Geneva, whatever happens to Pier 12 is an engineering mystery that will take decades to litigate in international courts. We will be long gone, untouchable."

"Julian tried to warn the city," I said, tears finally burning in the corners of my eyes. "What did you do to him?"

Arthur looked at me with chilling indifference. "Julian fell off his boat during a storm because he refused to understand the law of self-preservation. Just as you are refusing to understand it right now."

He turned to the man with the hydraulic torch. "Burn the safe open. Extract the cylinders and the logbooks. Then flood the intake valves manually. The police will find that Ava and Victoria broke into the decommissioned sewer tunnels and drowned when the tide surged."

"You're going to kill your own daughter?" Victoria spat, stepping forward.

May you like

"My daughter died the day she sided with the people trying to dismantle my life's work," Arthur said softly. "Cut the locks."
