Chapter 44 - The Severed Wire

A deafening groan of tortured steel echoed from the depths of the dry dock. The emergency sirens across the harbor shrieked to life, their wails tearing through the midnight fog.

Down in the basin, the massive hydraulic cylinders began to retract. Millions of gallons of dark sea brine slammed against the exterior sluice gates, frothing white with savage momentum. The vibration shook the metal catwalk beneath our feet, rattling the iron bolts.

Eleanor watched with sadistic anticipation, expecting the sickening crunch of collapsing concrete.

Instead, a deep, rhythmic hydraulic hum vibrated through the bedrock.

From fifty feet below the waterline, an array of emerald-green indicator lights flared to life along the concrete seawall. The massive steel flood barriers didn't buckle. As the ocean pressed against them, the secondary pressure sensors activated, engaging the pneumatic locks I had secretly recalibrated forty-eight hours ago. The floodgates locked into the reinforced bedrock with a thunderous *thud* that shook the entire harbor—and held fast.

The water didn't breach. The basin remained dry. The Marina Bay foundations stood immovable, like a mountain rooted to the ocean floor.

"Impossible," Eleanor whispered, frantically mashing the control pad. "The bypass sequence was hardcoded into the municipal grid!"

"It was," a calm voice rang out from the shadows behind the dry dock control tower.

Detective Vance, accompanied by half a dozen state troopers in tactical gear, emerged with weapons drawn. Behind them walked Julian’s head of corporate security, holding an encrypted tablet showing the Founders' private offshore communication logs.

"Eleanor Thorne," the detective called out, his weapon leveled directly at the matriarch. "Drop the remote. We’ve had a trace on that unauthorized frequency since Marcus Vance started singing in federal custody six hours ago."

Eleanor looked around wildly. Her two bodyguards slowly raised their hands, realizing the game was over before it even began.

"You think this saves you, Ava?" Eleanor spat, her aristocratic mask crumbling into pure hatred as the troopers clamped steel cuffs around her wrists. "The Circle isn't just me. It's the bloodlines that financed this empire. You will never build another wall in this hemisphere."

I watched them drag her into the back of a black police cruiser, the revolving red lights painting the foggy dock in shades of scarlet.

Arthur leaned heavily on me, tears streaming down his weathered cheeks. "It’s over, Ava. It’s finally over."

"No, Dad," I whispered, feeling the cold cedar box still under my arm. "The foot soldiers are gone. Now we take their throne."
