Chapter 14 - Fractured Foundations

The rain hammered against the stained glass windows of the United States District Court like scattershot. Inside the wood-paneled chambers of Magistrate Vance Holloway, the air was thick with the scent of old leather and ozone.
Across the mahogany table sat Richard Montgomery, impeccably tailored in bespoke Savile Row charcoal, radiating the effortless arrogance of ancestral wealth. To his right sat Clara, dressed in an ivory wool suit, her chin tilted at an angle that radiated contemptuous amusement. Their legal team—four senior partners from the city’s most ruthless corporate defense firm—spread open three bound volumes of patent documentation.
"Your Honor," Montgomery’s lead counsel intoned, his baritone voice dripping with condescending pity. "Ms. Vance’s design for the Saint-Germain facade relies entirely on the kinetic thermal damping equations developed under Aegis Urban Capital’s proprietary umbrella. We have date-stamped server uploads from three years ago."
"Those uploads were ripped from my personal laptop," I spoke up, leaning forward, my hands flat against the mahogany. "Equations I formulated while supporting the household of my former husband."
"Unsupported assertions, Ms. Vance," Clara chimed in, offering a saccharine, patronizing smile. "The domestic arrangements of your past do not constitute corporate chain-of-custody. The files were surrendered voluntarily by an authorized party."
The double doors of the chamber swung open with a resounding thud.
Every head turned. Ethan stood in the doorway, drenched in rain, his trench coat dripping onto the parquet floor, clutching a heavy, vintage leather-bound ledger with brass corners.
Clara’s smug smile instantly vanished, her jaw tightening as if she had swallowed a needle. "What is he doing here?" she hissed under her breath.
"Mr. Holloway," Ethan said, his voice ringing through the quiet room with a clarity I had not heard from him in a decade. He walked down the center aisle, ignoring Clara entirely, his focus locked onto the magistrate’s bench. "I am Ethan Cross. Former senior associate at Vanguard Equity, and the man who signed the Aegis chain-of-custody affidavit."
Magistrate Holloway peered over his horn-rimmed glasses. "Mr. Cross, you are listed as the primary transfer witness. Do you affirm the legitimacy of the transfer?"
"No, Your Honor," Ethan replied, placing the heavy leather ledger directly on the bench before the judge. "The affidavit Clara Montgomery submitted is an instrument of fraud. This ledger contains the handwritten journal of Ava Vance dating back seven years, alongside the automated time-stamped backups of my private household router. It proves Clara accessed my home server without authorization on October twelfth, forty-eight hours after she pressured me to sign what she claimed was a non-disclosure settlement."
Clara rose abruptly from her chair, her face contorting with sudden panic. "Ethan, you signed the release! You signed it willingly!"
May you like
"I signed a lie, Clara," Ethan answered without looking at her, his voice absolute and unyielding. "Because for years I lived in a house where an extraordinary woman fed my ambition while I repaid her with blindness. I will not let you steal the light she forged with her own hands."
