Chapter 45 - The Boardroom at 3 A.M.

Three hours after the arrest at Dry Dock 4, the penthouse boardroom of Sterling Architecture was lit like an operating theater.

Blueprints, bank routing numbers, and corporate filings were spread across the twenty-foot teak conference table. My assistant, Clara, was running on black coffee and nervous adrenaline, fielding calls from legal teams in London, Zurich, and New York.

"Ava," Clara said, setting down her phone with trembling fingers. "The financial fallout just started. The moment Eleanor Thorne’s arrest hit the private news feeds, four major hedge funds tied to the Founders’ Circle began dumping Sterling-Vance stock. They’re trying to trigger a margin call on our construction bonds before the market opens at nine."

"Let them dump it," I replied without looking up from the master financial ledger Julian had hidden inside the bottom lining of the cedar box.

Arthur sat in the leather chair beside me, a cup of chamomile tea untouched in his hands. "If our stock drops below forty dollars, Ava, the consortium has a contractual right to seize our collateral. That includes the family home, the drafts, and the land rights to Marina Bay."

"Look at the routing numbers, Dad," I said, turning the monitor toward him.

On the screen was an encrypted offshore account under the name *Project Phoenix*—an account Julian had opened in Geneva two years before our divorce was finalized. Every month for eight years, while I had left dinner in the refrigerator for a husband who worked eighteen-hour days in silence, Julian had been transferring sixty percent of the Vance Corporation’s profits into this trust.

The balance at the bottom of the screen was staggering: one point two billion dollars.

Attached to the account was an automated audio file labeled: *To Ava, for when the wolves arrive.*

My finger hovered over the trackpad. Clara and Arthur went silent. I clicked play.

Julian’s voice, raspy from the early stages of his illness but laced with that cold, razor-sharp precision I remembered so well, filled the boardroom:

*"Ava. If you are hearing this, Eleanor has made her move, and your father has finally told you the truth about the Founders. I knew I couldn't beat them from the outside. They were too deeply entrenched in our city's bones. So I played their monster. I let Marcus embezzle. I let the Circle believe I was their obedient lapdog. And I took their money, dollar by dollar, and put it in your name. Use this fund to buy every single share they dump at dawn. Don't just save the company, Ava. Buy the city out from under them."*

The recording clicked off. A profound silence fell over the room.
