Chapter 42 - The Shadow at Dry Dock 4

The fog over the bay was thick as grease, rolling off the black swell of the Atlantic and blanketing the rusting silhouettes of the industrial quarter. Dry Dock 4 stood like a hollow ribcage against the night sky, its colossal concrete basin emptied of vessels, echoing with the rhythmic slosh of the tide against the seawall.
My boots echoed on the wet metal gangway. Arthur walked beside me, his cane clicking against the iron grating, refusing to stay behind despite my pleas. Behind us, hidden in the perimeter shadows, two of Julian’s former security contractors—men whose loyalty had been bought with Julian’s private trust rather than corporate payroll—waited for my signal.
"Punctual. Just as your father used to be before his conscience made him soft."
A voice emerged from the gloom near the edge of the deep dry dock basin. A woman stepped into the pool of yellow sodium light. She was tall, draped in a tailored shearling coat, her silver hair pulled back into a severe chignon. Beside her stood two men in immaculate dark suits, their silhouettes rigid, hands clasped low.
"Eleanor Thorne," Arthur whispered, his breath catching. "You were Julian’s godmother."
Eleanor smiled, a sharp, humorless curve of red lips. "And Julian’s greatest disappointment. He spent the last five years of his life playing the tragic, estranged husband to protect this little girl, while bleeding the Circle’s accounts dry to build structural counter-measures we couldn't bypass." She turned her ice-blue eyes toward me. "Julian thought he was clever, Ava. But cancer took him before he could finish sealing the lower ballast chambers."
"You killed him," the accusation slipped from my lips before I could stop it.
"Julian’s heart gave out under the weight of his own hubris," Eleanor countered smoothly. "He wanted to take the harbor away from the families who carved it out of the wilderness. He wanted to give it to *you*—a middle-class architect who thinks buildings are art rather than collateral."
She gestured toward the open floor of the dry dock below, where a glowing control rig was clamped directly onto the primary municipal floodgate actuator.

"Twenty minutes until midnight, Ava. Sign the transfer of the Marina Bay trust into the Founders’ portfolio. Give us the keys to the harbor, or I press this override switch, the tidal gates open, and the pressure will shatter the unreinforced sub-levels of your new high-rise within minutes."
