Chapter 46 - The Bastion of Betrayal

The corridors of *Project Poseidon* smelled of ozone, stagnant ocean moisture, and fresh gun oil.

Dylan moved at the point of the wedge, his boots making no sound on the perforated steel gangways. Overhead, thick bundles of high-voltage cabling vibrated with electrical hums, feeding power from the geothermal generator to the massive silos.

As they rounded the bulkhead into the auxiliary generator room, two Aegis mercenaries dressed in pressurized urban camo stepped out, assault carbines slung low. They barely had time to register Dylan's silhouette before two quiet thuds echoed through the corridor. Dylan's suppressed rounds took both men cleanly through their visors, dropping them against the bulkheads without a shout.

"Clear," Dylan whispered, stepping over the bodies and retrieving the lead guard’s keycard.

They pushed deeper into the labyrinth, passing ancient blast shields stenciled with faded Department of the Navy insignias. It was infuriating to see this place—once built by brave American engineers to deter global annihilation—defiled by private military contractors who served nothing but corporate greed and sociopathic ego.

Suddenly, the overhead klaxon wailed. A strobe of amber emergency lights flooded the hallways, casting violent shadows against the damp walls.

"Intruder alert in Sub-Level Three," an automated voice announced over the intercom. "Lockdown protocol engaged. Security details, intercept at Blast Gate Delta."

"They tripped the pressure differential," corporal Ramirez hissed, his heavy machine gun coming up to high ready. "They know we breached the airlock!"

"Then we abandon stealth," Dylan ordered, his voice ringing with cold command. "Ramirez, blow the hydraulic hinge on that blast gate. We push straight to Sector Seven!"

Ramirez slapped a strip of breaching thermite across the interlocking steel teeth of Blast Gate Delta. He stepped back, ignited the fuse, and a blinding white fountain of molten metal consumed the lock mechanism. Dylan kicked the heavy door inward with a violent crash.

Instantly, the corridor erupted in deafening gunfire.

Muzzle flashes strobed through the smoke as a half-dozen Aegis mercenaries opened fire with heavy caliber rifles. Bullets ricocheted off the steel floor, sending red-hot sparks shearing past Dylan’s face. Dylan dropped to one knee behind an industrial pipe manifold, firing controlled double-taps that sent two enemy gunners tumbling backward down the steel stairs.

Beside him, his Raiders moved with terrifying precision. Flashbangs detonated in quick, concussive bursts, blinding the defenders before shotgun blasts breached their defensive line. Dylan surged forward, sweeping his rifle across the catwalk, neutralizing the remaining guards before they could retreat behind the blast doors.

Smoke hung heavy in the air. The corridor was strewn with spent brass and fallen mercenaries. Dylan stepped past them, his pulse steady, his heart cold.

Ahead of them lay the monolithic circular vault of Sector Seven—and beyond it, the man who had brought shame to their family’s name.
