Chapter 39 - The Whispering Shadows

Twelve hours later, Dylan sat in the sterile, fluorescent-lit debriefing room aboard the USS *America*, an amphibious assault ship steaming toward San Diego.

His wounds had been cleaned and stitched; his broken ribs were tightly bound beneath a clean Marine Corps PT shirt. Mia sat across the metal table, sipping black coffee, her own injuries tended to by Navy corpsmen.

Through the thick observation window, Dylan could see two armed Marine MPs standing guard outside the intensive care medical bay where Marcus was being held under 24-hour surveillance, handcuffed to a steel hospital gurney.

The door hissed open.

A tall man with iron-gray hair, a chest adorned with three rows of combat ribbons, and the three stars of a Lieutenant General entered the room. It was Lieutenant General Arthur Hayes, Deputy Commandant of the Marine Corps and a lifelong friend of Dylan’s late father.

Dylan and Mia immediately moved to stand at attention, but Hayes raised a weathered hand.

"At ease, both of you," General Hayes said, his deep voice carrying the gravity of forty years of command. He pulled out a steel chair, sitting down across from Dylan. On the table, he placed a manila folder marked with red top-secret stamps.

"I’ve spent the last six hours reviewing the drive you pulled off Marcus's flagship," Hayes said quietly. "It goes deeper than we ever imagined. Marcus wasn't the head of the snake, Dylan. He was just the broker. Five senior Pentagon defense contractors and three sitting congressmen were using his black-market shipments to fund unsanctioned shadow wars in the South China Sea."

Dylan looked the General in the eye. "And my father? Did Marcus have anything to do with Dad’s helicopter crash three years ago?"

General Hayes looked down at the folder, his jaw tightening with barely suppressed fury. "Your father uncovered Marcus's illicit supply lines when he was still an active Colonel. He warned Marcus to turn himself in. Two weeks later, your father's transport went down off the coast of Okinawa due to 'mechanical failure'."

Mia gasped, her hand flying to her mouth.

Dylan felt an icy chill grip his heart. The pain in his chest felt sharper than any bullet wound. The brother who had thrown his badge in the gravel, who had treated him like worthless trash... had murdered their own father to protect his empire of greed.
