Chapter 41 - Ashes of Betrayal

The USS *America* slipped into San Diego Harbor as the golden California sunset illuminated the skyline. On the pier, hundreds of Marines stood in full dress blues, drawn up in crisp, immaculate formation.

When the gangway touched the concrete, Dylan and Mia walked down together. Dylan wore his newly pressed service uniform, his father's silver insignia gleaming proudly above his breast pocket. Beside him walked Mia, her head held high, the trauma of the past weeks replaced by cold, unbreakable resolve.

Behind them, guarded by four armed MPs with fixed bayonets, Marcus was wheeled down the gangway in chains, his head bowed, his face hidden from the glaring cameras of the military journalists lined up along the cordon.

As Marcus passed the front rank of the 1st Marine Division honor guard, not a single Marine saluted him. The silence was deafening—a silent, crushing verdict from the brothers-in-arms he had betrayed.

At the foot of the gangway, Dylan paused. He looked back at his broken, chained brother one last time.

Marcus slowly raised his bruised eyes, his voice a pathetic whimper. "Dylan... please. Talk to Hayes. Tell them I had no choice. Tell them... they forced me..."

Dylan walked over to him, standing tall in the fading light. "You had a choice every single day, Marcus. You chose yourself over the Corps. You chose greed over family. You threw my badge into the gravel and called me a disgrace. But the truth is... you were never a Marine. You were just a ghost in a uniform."

Dylan turned on his heel, leaving Marcus behind to face the cold justice of the law.

He walked past the formation of saluting Marines, each man snapping to attention as Dylan passed. For the first time in his life, Dylan didn't feel like the younger brother living in the shadow of a decorated officer. He was Dylan Vance. A Marine who had faced hell and walked back out on his own terms.
