Chapter 16 - Firefight in the Foyer

The front hallway opened directly into the formal living room. Standing near the brick fireplace was a broad-shouldered man in tactical cargo gear, holding Evelyn Vance by the collar of her knitted sweater. A second operative was kneeling near the shattered bookshelf, tearing through David’s framed commendations with a combat knife.

"Federal agents! Drop the weapon!" Mia bellowed, her suppressed rifle snapping up in a single fluid motion.

The kneeling operative spun, raising a submachine gun, but he was half a second too slow. Mia’s suppressed rifle coughed twice—*thwip-thwip*. Two high-velocity rounds punched through the man's chest plate seam, dropping him instantly to the hardwood floor.

The second man reacted with lethal speed, yanking Evelyn in front of him as a human shield and raising a heavy semi-automatic pistol toward Mia. "Drop it, or her brains paint the mantelpiece!"

Mia froze, holding her rifle raised, her sight pinned directly to the visible two inches of the man's skull behind Evelyn's gray hair. But Evelyn was struggling, weeping hysterically, throwing off the clean line of fire.

"Mia! Dylan!" Evelyn screamed.

"Quiet!" the gunman barked, thumbing back the hammer. "Rifle down on the floor, little girl! Right now, or she dies!"

From the darkened kitchen threshold, Dylan emerged without a sound.

He had looped around through the garage breezeway—a flank maneuver Mia had drilled into his skull during their tactical discussions years ago. Dylan held his service pistol in a locked two-handed stance, sweeping the corner at waist height.

"Let go of my mother," Dylan said, his voice flat, devoid of the hesitation that had plagued him for years.

The gunman flinched, startled by the presence of a second shooter from his blind spot. In that microsecond of divided attention, Evelyn slammed her elbow backward into the gunman’s ribs with every ounce of strength left in her body.

The man grunted, his aim deflecting downward.

"Dylan, take him!" Mia shouted.

Dylan didn’t hesitate. He pulled the trigger three times in rapid succession. The double-tap center mass rocked the mercenary backward; the third shot clipped his shoulder, spinning him away from Evelyn.

Mia surged forward like a coiled spring. She closed the distance in two strides, kicking the fallen firearm across the room, driving her tactical boot directly into the operative’s sternum, and pinning his head against the brick hearth with the muzzle of her rifle.

"Move a finger," Mia whispered, her voice colder than the grave, "and I’ll end your lineage."

The living room fell into absolute, deafening silence, punctuated only by the smell of burnt gunpowder and Evelyn’s ragged sobs.

Dylan lowered his weapon, his chest heaving, before dropping to his knees beside his mother. "Mom. Mom, look at me. It’s over. You’re safe."

Evelyn threw her arms around Dylan’s tactical vest, burying her face into his shoulder, weeping uncontrollably as the young Marine held her with ironclad resolve.
