Chapter 28 - Black Water Intercept

The stealth interceptor craft cut through the ocean swells like a black razor blade. The twin turbocharged marine diesel engines produced a muted, guttural roar as the hull skipped across four-foot waves at fifty-five knots, throwing plumes of salt spray into the freezing night air.
Dylan stood at the bow, clinging to the carbon-fiber gunwale, his thermal night-vision goggles pulled down over his eyes. The world was rendered in shades of radioactive green and thermal white. Through the fog, twenty nautical miles out, a massive thermal silhouette bloomed against the empty horizon.
"Target acquired!" Dylan shouted over the roar of the wind. "Bearing two-two-zero! It’s the *Caspian Tide*!"
Mia, working the radar console beside the helm, nodded grimly. "She’s slowing down to take on fuel from an offshore rogue tanker. That gives us our window. If we approach from her blind spot at the stern, beneath the engine exhaust plume, their surface-search radar won't pick up our fiberglass hull."
"How are we boarding?" Dylan asked, checking the grappling hook pneumatic launcher strapped to his pack.
"Old-school," Mia replied, throttling up. "Stern swim platform. We hit the lower engineering bay, disable their emergency power couplings, and cut Marcus off from his bridge before he can send that cyber-payload to the satellite network."
As they closed the distance to five hundred yards, the true scale of the *Caspian Tide* became terrifyingly clear. The vessel was a converted four-hundred-foot commercial expedition ship, reinforced with naval-grade armor plates and fitted with high-frequency dish arrays along its upper deck. Armed sentries in thermal-resistant ghillie jackets patrolled the catwalks with heavy machine guns.
Suddenly, a blinding white spotlight slashed through the darkness from the ship's aft tower, pinning their boat directly in its glare.
"Ambush!" Dylan roared.
A heavy Browning .50-caliber machine gun opened fire from the cargo crane platform. Massive rounds hammered into the water around the interceptor, geysers of seawater erupting ten feet into the air.
"Hold on!" Mia yelled, wrenching the wheel hard to port as a round sheared off their outboard starboard antenna in a shower of sparks.
Dylan dropped to one knee, raising the heavy Barrett anti-material rifle onto the boat's reinforced mount. Through the thermal scope, he locked onto the gunner behind the searchlight. Inhale. Exhale. He squeezed the trigger.
The Barrett barked with thunderous power. A second later, the spotlight shattered into a shower of sparks, and the machine gun fell silent as the operator collapsed over the railing.
"Now, Dylan! Launch the line!" Mia shouted, driving the boat directly into the boiling wake behind the ship’s giant twin screws.

Dylan fired the pneumatic launcher. The titanium grapple whistled through the dark, biting deep into the steel safety grating of the ship’s lower vehicle ramp. Without waiting for orders, Dylan unhooked his carabiner, grabbed the ascending winch line, and launched himself into the black spray toward the belly of the beast.
