Chapter 24 - The Hunted Bloodline

The bunker’s reinforced concrete ceiling shuddered violently as the first wave of 20mm autocannon rounds chewed into the harbor tarmac above. The low, guttural thrum of twin-engine AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters vibrated through the soles of Dylan’s boots, rattling the loose spent shell casings on the bloodstained floor.
"They aren't here to detain us, Dylan," Mia said, her voice eerily calm despite the crimson emergency lights painting her face in harsh angles. She stripped the empty magazine from her rifle, slapping a fresh thirty-round mag home with a sharp, practiced click. "Marcus didn't just order an arrest. That broadcast was an execution warrant. To every pilot and Marine in this sector, we’re rogue terrorists who just took down Naval Pier Four."
Dylan adjusted his grip on his carbine, wiping sweat and diesel soot from his eyes. His heart pounded like a war drum against his ribs, but beneath the fear was a sudden, icy clarity. For years, he had been the outcast brother—the Marine who had his badge ripped from his uniform and cast into the dirt while his family looked the other way. But standing here with Mia in the shadow of total annihilation, there was no shame left to carry. Only survival.
"Then we don't play by their rules anymore," Dylan said, his jaw tightening. "How do we get out of this box?"
Mia pulled a tactical tablet from her vest, its cracked glass glowing blue against the dark. "Pier Four has a cold-war era drainage conduits running beneath the dry docks. It empties two miles south into the marshlands near the commercial shipping canal. Marcus thinks we’ll try to fight our way inland through the main gate."
A deafening blast tore through the blast door's outer hinges. The heavy steel grooved inward under a thermite breach charge, bright white sparks cascading across the threshold like falling stars.
"They’re inside the vestibule!" Dylan barked, raising his weapon to cover the smoking doorway.
"Move! Drainage hatch, now!" Mia commanded, wrenching open a heavy iron floor grate with a crowbar.
Dylan didn't hesitate. He dropped through the opening into waist-deep, brackish water just as the bunker door blew inward. High-velocity rounds ricocheted through the bunker above them, sparks illuminating the boots of black-clad tactical operators clearing the room. Mia dropped down beside him, hauling the heavy grate back into position with a grunt of pain.

In total blackness, submerged in the foul chill of seawater and oil, Dylan took the lead. The muffled detonations of the military sweep echoed through the pipes above, but with every step south through the underground conduits, the roar of Marcus Vance’s manhunt grew fainter. They were officially dead to the world, hunted by the country they swore an oath to defend—and Dylan knew their only way back into the light was through the man who had burned their names to ash.
