Chapter 15 - The Perimeter Breached

Magnolia Lane was an idyllic, tree-lined cul-de-sac framed by jacarandas and manicured coastal lawns. But as Mia cut the Charger’s headlights and drifted silently around the final bend, the suburban tranquility was already broken.

Parked halfway up the curb in front of 412 Magnolia Lane sat a slate-grey cargo van with blacked-out windows and stolen plates.

Mia killed the ignition and coasted into the neighboring driveway, shielded behind an overgrown hedge. "Engine’s still hot," she whispered, her tactical awareness taking over. "Exhaust pipe is dripping. They arrived less than two minutes ago."

Dylan leaned forward, peering through the windshield. The front door of the single-story home was slightly ajar. Splintered white molding hung from the deadbolt housing.

"They kicked it in," Dylan breathed, his heart hammering against his ribs. "Mom's inside. Oh God, Mia, she was making breakfast."

"Breathe, Dylan. Control your heart rate," Mia commanded softly, reaching into the rear footwell. She unzipped an emergency covert operations bag, pulling out a suppressed SIG Sauer MCX Rattler and tossing a spare plate carrier and loaded magazine pouch to Dylan. "Put it on. Tighten the cummerbund. Finger off the trigger until your sights are on hostile meat."

Dylan buckled the Kevlar vest over his uniform, his hands steadying as he fed a magazine into his M18 pistol and chambered a round. The brass click echoed sharply in the cabin. He looked at Mia—no longer the older sister who used to help him with his algebra homework, but an apex predator who had survived the darkest valleys on earth.

"Standard two-man breach," Mia instructed, checking her optic. "I take high, you take low. We move through the kitchen corridor toward the living room. If Mom is a hostage, do not fire until I establish a crossfire angle. Understood?"

"Understood," Dylan nodded.

They moved like twin phantoms across the grass, boots making zero sound on the damp turf. Reaching the entryway, Mia paused, pressing her back against the stucco wall.

From inside the quiet suburban hallway, the sound of tearing drywall and smashed porcelain echoed. Then came a sharp, terrified gasp—their mother's voice.

"I don't know what you're looking for!" Evelyn Vance cried out, her voice trembling. "Take whatever you want! There’s jewelry in the master bedroom, take the silver—"

A harsh, accented voice cut her off with a vicious slap that reverberated down the hallway. "Shut up, old woman. The ledger. David Vance’s ledger. Where is the drive?"

Dylan's jaw tightened so hard his molars ground together. He looked at Mia. Her eyes had turned to pure winter frost.

She raised two fingers, counted down to zero, and swept through the doorway.
