Chapter 13 - The Storm on the Horizon

The sun broke through the coastal fog, casting long golden beams across the Camp Pendleton tarmac as the NCIS transport vans departed with Miller and his accomplices.

Dylan stood beside Mia outside the armory, watching the red taillights vanish past the security barriers. For the first time in his adult life, the crushing weight of fear and artificial pride had lifted from his chest.

"He’s going to prison for twenty years, isn't he?" Dylan asked quietly.

"At least," Mia replied. "The evidence you provided cleared your name from the conspiracy, Dylan. Vance signed off on your retention. You're staying in the Corps."

Dylan let out a long, ragged breath, blinking back tears. He turned toward Mia and offered a crisp, formal salute—not out of regulation, but out of absolute, boundless reverence. "Thank you, Major. Thank you, Mia."

Mia smiled, reaching up to return the salute before pulling her brother into a warm embrace. "You did good today, Dylan. Dad would have actually been proud of this. The real kind of proud."

Dylan nodded, his heart finally at peace. "Let's go home. Mom made breakfast. She wants to apologize properly."

Mia pulled her phone from her pocket as it began vibrating with an urgent notification. She looked down at the display. It was an encrypted flash message from the Special Operations Command tactical fusion center in Tampa.

She unlocked the screen. The text sent an icy chill straight through her veins:

**ALERT: INTERCEPTED COMMUNICATIONS FROM SSGT MILLER'S CELL REVEAL BUYER IDENTITY.**

**BUYER IS TARGET CODE-NAME 'AL-ZILAL' — PRIMARY BROKER RESPONSIBLE FOR 2019 KUNAR VALLEY HELICOPTER AMBUSH.**

**LOCAL SURVEILLANCE CONFIRMS SUSPECT VEHICLE REGISTERED TO HOSTILE CELL EN ROUTE TO RESIDENCE: 412 MAGNOLIA LANE, OCEANSIDE.**

Mia’s breath stopped.

412 Magnolia Lane was their mother’s house.

And Evelyn was home alone.

"Mia?" Dylan asked, noticing the sudden deathly pale color in her face. "What is it? What’s wrong?"

Mia sprinted toward her car, tearing the driver’s door open. "Get in the car, Dylan! NOW!"
