Chapter 7 - The Viral Storm

While Arthur Sterling stumbled out of the terminal operations suite in a state of catatonic shock, the fallout from Flight 842 was tearing through the internet like a wildfire.

In the Cook County central booking station, Victoria Vance sat on a cold stainless-steel bench inside a holding cell. Her designer stockings were torn, her hair was a tangled nest, and her uniform blouse was stripped of its gold wings and company pins. The foul stench of cheap disinfectant and stale sweat filled her nostrils.

"Officer! Officer, please!" Victoria rattled the heavy iron bars, her voice hoarse from hours of screaming. "My phone call! I’m entitled to a phone call! I need to reach Arthur Sterling!"

A bored corrections officer walked past, carrying a clipboard. She didn't even turn her head. "Mr. Sterling’s office already called, Vance. They issued a statement three minutes ago. Want me to read it to you?"

Victoria’s heart leaped. "Yes! He’s issuing my bail! He’s clearing this up!"

The officer pulled up a news alert on her personal phone and read aloud: *"Apex Air officially confirms the immediate, dishonorable termination of probationary employee Victoria Vance. The company condemns her heinous and unprovoked violence against Mrs. Elena Carter and pledges full, unreserved cooperation with Cook County prosecutors to ensure she faces the maximum legal penalties for assault and hate-motivated battery."*

Victoria collapsed against the cold bars, her knees buckling. "No... no, no, no... Arthur promised! He promised I was untouchable!"

"Nobody’s untouchable, sweetie," the officer said casually, walking away down the corridor. "Especially when you slap the lady who signs the checks."

Meanwhile, outside O'Hare's baggage claim, an entirely different scene was playing out.

Dozens of passengers from Flight 842 were surrounded by news cameras and local reporters. Instead of anger and frustration, the crowd was in high spirits. The tech executive from seat 2B was speaking directly into a forest of microphones.

"I’ve flown over a million miles," he told the cameras, grinning broadly. "And I’ve never seen corporate justice served like that. Mrs. Carter didn't hide in a private suite. She stood right there, handled that out-of-control attendant with utter grace, and then made sure every single one of us got two thousand dollars, a full refund, and suites at the Drake Hotel tonight. That’s what real leadership looks like."
