Chapter 39 - The Arctic Divergence

Flight 001 pitched violently down into an eighty-degree dive.
Inside the cabin, the sensation of weightlessness hit instantly. Food trays, pens, and loose personal items floated up into the crimson-lit air before crashing down onto the ceiling panels. Screams of pure terror erupted from the main passenger compartment as the Dreamliner roared downward at over six hundred miles per hour, plunging directly into a thick, blinding bank of arctic storm clouds.
Outside, the black military jet attempted to follow. But its massive, lumbering airframe could not withstand the sudden plunge. Through the cockpit windshield, Elena watched as the pursuing jet’s wings began to oscillate wildly in the severe wake turbulence, forced to pull up sharply to avoid catastrophic structural failure.
"We broke visual contact!" Davies shouted, his voice cracking under the crushing G-forces as Flight 001 rocketed through fifteen thousand feet... ten thousand feet... eight thousand feet.
The airspeed indicator raced toward the redline margin. The airframe groaned with terrifying metallic shrieks, rivets vibrating, windows rattling as if under the assault of a thousand hammers.
"Pull out, Vance! PULL OUT!" Elena screamed, bracing herself against the instrument panel.
Vance and Davies hauled back on the yokes together, their muscles tearing against the sheer hydraulic resistance. The nose of the Dreamliner slowly, painfully fought its way up, leveling out at barely two thousand feet above the raging, white-capped waves of the North Atlantic.
The aircraft slammed through a wall of torrential sleet and freezing fog. The black military jet was gone from their mirrors, completely blinded by the low-altitude cloud deck.
"We shook them," Davies gasped, vomiting into an emergency bag from the sheer physical shock. "God almighty... we shook them."
"Look at our fuel," Vance said, his face draining of whatever color remained.
Elena looked at the center display. The violent dive and high-thrust escape had drained their reserves to critical levels.

"Fuel starvation in twenty-five minutes," Vance whispered. "Shannon is out of reach. Reykjavik is blocked by the storm. We have nowhere to land."
