Chapter 6 - Unmasking the Rotten Root

Arthur’s mouth moved silently for several moments, resembling a landed fish gasping for moisture. The slick bravado that had carried him through boardrooms for two decades had completely evaporated, stripped away by the undeniable evidence laid out under the harsh fluorescent lights.

"Elena... in corporate governance, there are relationships that must be maintained for the broader health of the company," Arthur stammered, desperate to salvage a shred of defense. "Her father controls twenty million dollars in municipal bond financing for our new concourse. Victoria was difficult, yes, high-strung, but—"

"She slapped me, Arthur," Elena said, leaning forward, her eyes blazing with an unyielding, righteous fury. "She stood over me in the cabin my father built, degraded me, threatened to alter my identity, and struck me across the face because she believed I was a defenseless Black woman who didn't belong in First Class."

Arthur cringed as if the slap had landed on his own cheek. "I abhor what she did! I swear on my mother’s grave, I never sanctioned violence!"

"You sanctioned the culture that birthed it," Elena countered mercilessly. "When you teach senior crew that privilege protects them from consequences, you invite tyranny into the cabin. When you sweep racism and arrogance under the rug to protect your private golf-course alliances, you rot this airline from the cockpit to the tail."

Elena glanced toward her lead attorney, David Vance (no relation to Victoria). David slid a second document forward—a formal notification of emergency shareholder action.

"Arthur Sterling," Elena announced, her voice echoing with sovereign finality, "effective immediately at 21:45 hours, your executive privileges, access credentials, and administrative authority as Chief Executive Officer of Apex Air are suspended."

Arthur jumped out of his chair, knocking it backward into the wall. "You can't do that unilaterally! The board must vote! The bylaws require a forty-eight-hour notice for any executive disciplinary action!"

"Read the bylaws you love so dearly," Elena said coldly. "Article 9, Section 4: The Chairman of the Board reserves the right of immediate emergency suspension in the event of gross moral turpitude, severe reputational catastrophe, or direct liability endangering the corporation’s survival."

Elena turned her iPad toward Arthur.

The screen displayed the front page of CNN, Twitter, and TikTok. The video recorded by the young passenger in seat 2B had gone nuclear. The headline read:

*APEX AIR FLIGHT ATTENDANT HANDCUFFED AFTER VIOLENT RACIAL ATTACK ON MAJORITY OWNER ELENA CARTER.*

Over three million shares in under ninety minutes. Apex Air stock was already plummeting six percent in after-hours trading.

"Your emergency board meeting isn't in forty-eight hours, Arthur," Elena added, watching the man’s soul crumble. "It is at midnight tonight. On Zoom. And I suggest you spend the next two hours finding a criminal defense attorney, because my forensic accountants are already entering your office."
