Chapter 27 - The Poisoned Legacy

The silence in the subterranean vault was absolute, save for the crackling voice of Thomas Carter vibrating through the small speaker:
*"...The doctors thought it was a heart attack. But the toxicology screen I ordered in secret confirmed heavy-metal toxicity. Evelyn didn't just want control of the airline, Elena. She was terrified that I had discovered her secret partner in Apex Holdings. Arthur Sterling was never the brains of the operation. He was her pawn. The real partner who funded her shadow fleet... is the chairman of the European Civil Aviation Authority, Lord Reginald Croft."*
Marcus let out a sharp, incredulous breath. "Reginald Croft? The chief aviation regulator for all of Western Europe? He's the one presiding over the emergency shareholder tribunal tomorrow in Geneva!"
The tape continued, Thomas Carter’s voice growing weaker, yet laden with fierce fatherly love:
*"Evelyn believed that money and power could silence everything. But she forgot that an airline is built on truth. The golden share documents in this vault give you the legal right to challenge any tribunal. But more than that, Elena... inside this binder is the digital ledger of Croft’s private offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands. Take it. Reclaim our name. And remember: never let anyone clip your wings."*
The tape ended with a soft click.
Tears pooled in Elena’s eyes, but she did not let a single one fall. Her grief was swallowed by a towering, incandescent fury. Her mother had not only betrayed the company; she had murdered the man who gave Elena life, love, and courage.
"She killed him," Elena whispered, her knuckles whitening as she gripped the founding charter. "She poisoned him slowly, day by day, and watched him suffer in that hospital bed while she pretended to hold his hand."
Sarah looked up from her tablet, her screen flashing with red alerts. "Mrs. Carter... we have a catastrophic problem. The Geneva tribunal has moved up the schedule. Reginald Croft just issued an emergency executive order declaring the tribunal closed to the public, scheduled to convene at 9:00 PM tonight at the Carter Chateau in Geneva. They’re voting to liquidate Global Continental Airlines and transfer its fleet to an Apex subsidiary in three hours!"
"They’re moving the timetable because they suspect we're in Switzerland," Marcus said, checking his watch. "Geneva is two and a half hours away by road, through torrential rain. If we drive, we won't make it in time to stop the vote."
"Then we don't drive," Elena said, her eyes flashing with diamond-hard resolve. "Marcus, how fast can we get back to the DC-3?"
Marcus grinned, the spirit of a seasoned combat pilot flashing across his weathered face. "The old girl can reach Geneva in fifty minutes if we push the manifold pressure to redline."

"Let's go," Elena said, snapping the binder shut and tucking the cassette into her inner jacket pocket. "My mother invited the world to watch my destruction. It’s time I gave her a front-row seat to her own."
