Chapter 5 - The VIP Lounge Reckoning

The executive conference room inside O'Hare's Terminal 1 was normally reserved for FAA audits and crisis contingency meetings. Tonight, it felt like an imperial courtroom.

Elena Carter sat at the head of the long frosted-glass table. A small medical ice pack rested near her hand, alongside a plain white porcelain mug of black coffee. Flanking her were two corporate attorneys from her family’s private legal trust and the regional terminal director, who looked as though he was waiting for a firing squad.

The double doors burst open with a violent thud.

Arthur Sterling stumbled into the room, gasping for air. His tailored tie was crooked, his suit jacket soaked with rainwater, and his hair plastered to his forehead. He gripped the doorframe to steady his trembling knees, his wild eyes locking onto Elena.

"Elena!" Arthur gasped, lunging forward with his arms slightly outstretched in an attempt at manufactured warmth. "Mrs. Carter! My God! I rushed over the second I heard! Are you alright? Where is the medical team? I will personally have the EMTs fired for leaving you unattended!"

Elena didn’t flinch. She didn’t rise. She merely leveled a gaze at him that felt colder than the wind shearing off Lake Michigan.

"Sit down, Arthur," she commanded.

The simple, quiet sentence slammed into Arthur like a physical wall. He swallowed hard, pulled out a rolling leather chair at the opposite end of the table, and sank into it, his hands shaking as he clasped them atop the mahogany.

"Elena, please, let me explain," Arthur pleaded, wiping sweat from his eyebrows with a soaked sleeve. "Victoria Vance is an unstable individual. She suffered an apparent psychological break on that aircraft. I had no idea she was capable of such atrocious, disgraceful behavior! I am already drafting her immediate, unconditional termination. We will press the fullest charges possible, and—"

"Save your breath, Arthur," Elena interrupted, sliding a thick manila folder across the slick table. It stopped inches from Arthur’s chest. "Open it."

With trembling fingers, Arthur flipped open the folder. His heart plummeted into his stomach.

Inside were five separate HR incident reports spanning the last eighteen months. Each document detailed egregious behavioral infractions involving Victoria Vance: verbal abuse of minority passengers, discriminatory seat reassignments, and physical intimidation of junior cabin crew.

And at the bottom of every single report, stamped in bold blue ink, was Arthur Sterling’s personal executive override signature: *DISMISSED WITHOUT DISCIPLINARY ACTION.*

"You knew," Elena whispered, her voice cutting through the hum of the air conditioning like a scalpel. "You knew what she was. You knew how she treated our customers. And you shielded her because her father sits on your compensation committee."
