Chapter 17 - The Smuggled Black Box

The revelation hit the room like a physical blow. Flight 882 was one of Horizon Air’s flagship Boeing 777 passenger flights, carrying nearly three hundred innocent civilians across the ocean.

"He wouldn't dare," Marcus gasped, leaning over the laptop screen. "Julian Vance wouldn't risk an international incident of that magnitude."

"He doesn't care about the risk," Elena said, her instincts piecing the nightmare together in seconds. "Flight 882 was Arthur Sterling's designated route for tonight's primary high-value cargo transfer. When Arthur was arrested, that shipment was supposed to be grounded. Did that plane take off with that cargo on board?"

Sarah rapidly typed on her keyboard, her eyes scanning internal ground manifests. Her face went completely pale.

"Yes. A container marked *Special Diplomatic Courier — Vault Unit 4* was loaded into the rear lower cargo bay twenty minutes before departure. Signed off by a ramp manager who vanished from the airport an hour ago."

"What's in that container?" Detective Vance asked, grabbing his radio to alert the FBI Crisis Management Center.

"Not contraband," Elena realized, horror washing over her. "Evidence. The master black-box drive containing the entire digital ledger of the Apex Consortium’s smuggling routes, offshore accounts, and payoffs to corrupt officials across Europe. Sterling was holding it as leverage against Vance! Vance isn't trying to hijack the plane to escape—he’s trying to ensure that plane never lands."

"If that plane disappears over the Atlantic," Marcus said grimly, "the evidence disappears with it, Horizon Air takes the catastrophic blame, and Vance remains completely untouched in the shadows."

Elena looked at Marcus. "Can the cockpit crew override the navigational deviation manually?"

"Not if the fly-by-wire flight management computer has been remotely hijacked through the avionics data-bus," Marcus replied, his voice tense. "Arthur’s technicians had access to the maintenance software for months. They could lock the cockpit out of the autopilot entirely."

"Then we have to take the flight back ourselves," Elena declared.

"Mrs. Carter, Flight 882 is already two hours out over the ocean," Detective Vance objected. "Commercial interceptors from the Air Force can't board a commercial airliner mid-flight. They'll scramble fighters to escort it, but if the controls don't respond, they will have to consider it a rogue threat!"

"We don't need to board it from the outside," Elena said, her eyes blazing with fiery determination. "Horizon Air maintains a supersonic long-range corporate intercept prototype in our private research hangar at Stewart International Airport. The SkyGuardian X."

Marcus's eyes widened. "Elena... that aircraft was designed for rapid avionics testing. It can reach Mach 1.8, but it hasn't been certified for civil operational transport!"

"It can outrun the 777 and establish a direct localized line-of-sight satellite datalink to the cockpit's maintenance override terminal," Elena countered. "Marcus, you flew naval fighters for ten years before you joined our airline. Can you fly that bird?"

Marcus Reynolds took a deep breath, adjusted his uniform jacket, and gave Elena a crisp, resolute nod.

"I can fly anything with wings, Mrs. Carter. But you are staying on the ground."

"Like hell I am," Elena snapped back, already grabbing her coat. "Julian Vance threatened my family, tried to kill me in my home, and now he is holding nearly three hundred of my passengers hostage. I am the CEO of this airline, Marcus. We fly together."
