Chapter 40 - Shadows over Greenland

Elena leaned over the navigation charts, her mind calculating survival odds with clinical speed.

"What about the abandoned military strip at Bluie West One?" Elena demanded, pointing to a tiny, faded contour line on the southern tip of Greenland. "The old World War Two auxiliary field in the fjord!"

Vance wiped cold sweat from his eyes. "Bluie West? Elena, that strip hasn't been maintained in thirty years! It’s packed with black ice, surrounded by three-thousand-foot granite cliffs, and there’s zero radar guidance! Landing a commercial Dreamliner in there without instrument landing systems is suicide!"

"Ditching in thirty-degree seawater with two hundred and eighty passengers is certain death," Elena answered, her gaze unyielding. "At least on ice, we have a chance to walk away. Set the coordinates, Vance. We're going into the fjord."

The Dreamliner banked hard to the northwest, skimming just above the churning grey ocean under a ceiling of dense, suffocating fog. Ice began to accumulate on the leading edges of the wings, the anti-ice heaters struggling against the failing electrical systems.

Back in the cabin, Marcus and the flight attendants worked miracles. Despite their own terror, they moved down the aisle, ensuring every single passenger was strapped in tight, showing them the brace position, speaking words of calm authority.

"Listen to me!" Elena’s voice came over the low-power cabin intercom, clear, strong, and completely devoid of fear. "We have suffered a severe navigational failure and are executing a precautionary landing on a remote strip in southern Greenland. Captain Vance is one of the most decorated aviators in commercial aviation. Trust your crew. Brace for impact when the signal is given. I will not leave this aircraft until every one of you is safe."

The passengers looked toward the front. Seeing their billionaire boss standing in the aisle with bruised arms, unyielding determination, and absolute calm, the panic subsided into a quiet, unified resolve.

Suddenly, Davies shouted from the cockpit. "Runway in sight! Three miles out! But Elena... there are lights on the ground!"

Elena rushed forward.

Through the blowing snow and jagged fjord walls, the ancient concrete runway emerged. But it was not abandoned.

Lined up along both sides of the icy strip were three black armored transport vehicles, their high-intensity searchlights beaming directly up into the sky.

Evelyn hadn't chased them to force a crash.

She had anticipated their only possible emergency diversion all along.
