Chapter 11 - Justice in the Court of Public Opinion

By 8:00 AM the following morning, the main lobby of Apex Air World Headquarters at O'Hare was packed with over a hundred journalists, television camera crews, and aviation correspondents.

When the side door opened, Elena Carter walked up to the podium. She did not wear makeup to conceal the faint bruise on her cheekbone; she wore it like a badge of honor. Beside her stood Captain Marcus Reynolds, newly appointed Head of Fleet Oversight, and Maya, wearing her new executive instructor badge.

"Good morning," Elena addressed the blinding sea of flashbulbs. Her voice was strong, warm, and resonated through every broadcast network in America.

"Last night, an incident occurred aboard Apex Air Flight 842 that revealed a failure of leadership, culture, and accountability within our company. A passenger was struck. A passenger was degraded. And that passenger happened to be me."

A murmur rippled through the press corps.

"Today, I announce that Arthur Sterling has been removed as CEO, and federal authorities have been granted unrestricted access to our executive ledgers. Victoria Vance remains in custody, facing felony battery charges without corporate legal backing. But more importantly, today marks a rebirth for Apex Air."

Elena laid out a sweeping reform agenda: a twenty-percent pay increase for regional flight attendants, mandatory anti-bias and empathy training led by Maya, and the creation of an independent passenger bill of rights overseen by Captain Reynolds.

"We fly people," Elena concluded, her eyes shining with tears of fierce pride. "We carry fathers to their children, dreamers to their futures, and families to their homes. From this day forward, dignity is not an upgrade on Apex Air. Dignity is the standard."
