Chapter 3 - The Handcuffs and the Livestream

The hydraulic hiss of the cabin doors opening gave way to the sharp, authoritative cadence of heavy leather boots marching up the jet bridge. Four uniformed officers from the Chicago Police Department filed into the forward cabin, their tasers and utility belts clicking softly in the stunned silence of the Boeing 777.
At the front of the pack, Sergeant Miller took one look at the red welt spreading across Elena Carter’s cheekbone, then shifted his gaze down to Victoria Vance, who was currently curled on her knees beside the jumpseat, sobbing hysterically.
"Officers! Thank God you're here!" Victoria shrieked, instantly scrambling toward them and reaching for Sergeant Miller’s pant leg. Her polished demeanor was completely shattered; mascara ran in dark, greasy streaks down her flushed cheeks. "This woman attacked me! She became combative during standard pre-flight procedures! I was defending myself—I was upholding FAA federal aviation regulations! She’s dangerous!"
The young tech executive in seat 2B scoffed loudly, holding his iPhone aloft so the entire room could see the glowing red recording icon. "Nice try, lady. I have every single second of your racist, power-tripping meltdown in 4K. Fifty-two thousand people are watching your little monologue right now, and the chat wants to know if you practiced those crocodile tears in the mirror."
Sergeant Miller held up a hand, silencing Victoria. He turned to Captain Marcus Reynolds. "Captain, report."
"Victoria Vance committed unprovoked assault and battery against passenger Elena Carter," Marcus stated clearly, his voice devoid of any hesitation. "She refused direct de-escalation, used verbal hostility, and struck Mrs. Carter across the face with an open palm. Furthermore, Mrs. Carter is the majority shareholder and Chairman of the Board of Apex Air. I personally witnessed the strike, as did my first officer, the cabin lead, and every passenger in rows one through four."
Victoria’s jaw unhinged. She looked desperately at Miller. "Marcus is lying! He has a personal vendetta against me because I reported his flight time irregularities last month! You can't believe him! I have rights! I’m Arthur Sterling’s personal appointment—you can’t touch me!"
"Ma'am, get up," Sergeant Miller commanded coldly.
"No! Get this woman off my plane first!" Victoria screamed, kicking her heels against the base of the galley partition.
Miller didn’t waste another breath. He nodded to the two patrolmen beside him. Within seconds, Victoria was pulled to her feet, spun around with professional precision, and slammed gently but firmly against the aircraft bulkhead. The sharp *clack-clack* of stainless steel handcuffs ratcheting around her wrists echoed through the first-class cabin like a death knell.
"Victoria Vance, you are under arrest for assault and battery. You have the right to remain silent..."
"Let go of me! Arthur! Call Arthur!" Victoria wailed, thrashing against the officers' grips as they marched her backward out of the aircraft.
As she was hauled past the economy curtain, the passengers seated behind the partition erupted into a chorus of jeers and thunderous applause. Flashbulbs illuminated her humiliated, tear-streaked face all the way down the jet bridge.
Elena remained standing by the galley counter, perfectly serene. She touched the cool surface of her ice glass to her sore cheek, watching the spectacle unfold without a flicker of pity in her dark eyes.
"Captain Reynolds," Elena said softly.
"Yes, Mrs. Carter?"
