Chapter 28 - Rebuilding the Foundation

The boardroom on the top floor of the Downtown Medical Clinic was bathed in warm, natural morning sunlight streaming through the massive glass windows that overlooked the bustling Manhattan skyline. The long mahogany conference table was surrounded by the clinic's founding physicians and senior directors—people who had spent months watching the Prescott family drama unfold with quiet anxiety.
When I pushed open the boardroom doors and stepped inside, all conversation ceased instantly. Every eye turned toward me.
Dr. Aris Thorne, the elderly chief of surgery and senior board member, stood up slowly from his seat at the head of the table. For a second, nobody spoke. Then, Dr. Thorne offered a slow, respectful nod of his head.
"Welcome back, Dr. Prescott," Aris said, his voice echoing quietly in the spacious room. "We received the emergency proxies and the federal clearance documentation. The board is officially convened."
I walked to the head of the table, resting my hands on the smooth polished wood, feeling a deep, grounding sense of peace wash over me. The chaos, the lawsuits, the toxic manipulations of my mother and sister—it was all finally dissolving into the past.
"Thank you, Dr. Thorne," I said, my voice steady, clear, and resonant. "I apologize for the turbulence surrounding the clinic's administrative operations over the past few weeks. But as you can see from the federal filings distributed to your seats, all outside financial threats have been permanently neutralized."
Julian walked into the boardroom a moment later, quietly taking a seat near the back entrance, keeping a watchful, protective eye over the proceedings while giving me full command of the room.
"Today," I continued, looking around the table at the dedicated physicians and researchers who made the clinic run, "we don't just talk about damage control. We talk about expansion. We have the full backing of our original medical endowments, unencumbered by corporate debt or familial interference. I propose we reallocate the seized assets from the restructured accounts directly into our community outreach and pediatric research wings."
A murmur of approval rippled around the table. Dr. Thorne smiled warmly, raising his hand in immediate agreement. "Motion approved unanimously."
By midday, the meeting concluded with a renewed sense of purpose and unity. As the board members filed out of the room, congratulating me and expressing their relief, I walked over to the floor-to-ceiling windows and looked down at the street below.
The commotion in front of the building was entirely gone. The reporters had dispersed to chase other headlines, the federal agents had taken Vance into custody, and Victoria had long since disappeared—presumably scrambling to find a lawyer who wouldn't charge her astronomical retainer fees she could no longer afford.
Julian walked up behind me, wrapping his strong arms gently around my waist, resting his chin softly on my shoulder.
"You handled that like a true queen," Julian murmured against my ear, a warm smile in his voice.
May you like
"I had good training," I replied, leaning back into his embrace, letting out a long, contented breath as the sunlight wrapped around us like a golden shield. "And I had the best partner a woman could ask for."
