Chapter 12 - The Digital Fortress

The war room was not a conference hall or a high-rise office; it was Julian’s private study, illuminated by the cold, blue glow of three massive monitors displaying real-time financial tracking, corporate registry databases, and encrypted communication channels.

Julian stood at the head of the mahogany table, his sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing the lean, muscular tension in his frame. His eyes were locked on a complex web of corporate entities flashing red across the center screen.

"Richard thinks he’s clever," Julian said, his voice smooth and cold. "He used a decentralized blockchain network to launder the remaining capital from the Prescott family trust, attempting to bypass traditional banking flags. But he made one critical mistake."

I leaned over the table, my eyes scanning the data streams. "He used his personal IP address to authorize the final transfer before closing his domestic accounts."

"Precisely," Julian nodded, a faint, predatory smirk touching the corner of his lips. "He’s arrogant. He assumed that because the local authorities were slow to move, cyber-intelligence units wouldn't bother tracking a mid-tier corporate fraud case. My team has already mirrored his entire server infrastructure. Every email, every offshore shell company, every fabricated signature—it's all backed up on an immutable cloud ledger."

Haley sat quietly in the corner of the room, wrapped in a heavy wool blanket, her eyes wide as she watched us operate. "What about the audit at my dental clinic on Monday? The state inspectors are scheduled to arrive at 9:00 AM sharp. If they walk in and see those fraudulent contracts attached to my facility, they'll lock the doors immediately."

I turned away from the monitors and walked over to my sister, kneeling beside her chair to look her directly in the eyes. "They won't walk in, Haley. Because by Sunday night, Julian’s legal team is filing an emergency federal restraining order against the auditing board, citing systemic identity theft and corporate impersonation by Richard Prescott. Furthermore, we’ve already retained the state’s top white-collar defense attorney to represent you pro bono."

Haley’s lower lip trembled, and a single tear escaped down her cheek, but this time, it was a tear of profound relief. "Thank you, Myriam. I... I don't know how I can ever repay you for what you and Julian are doing."

"You don't have to repay me," I said softly, squeezing her shoulder. "You just have to keep moving forward. You earned your license on your own merit. No one is ever going to take that away from you."

Julian checked his watch, his expression turning sharp again. "The counter-strike is locked and loaded. We have enough evidence to trigger an immediate Interpol red notice for Richard before he boards his private charter flight to Zurich tomorrow morning. But to execute it cleanly, we need one final piece of physical evidence—the master USB drive containing the original encrypted keys to his offshore accounts. And it’s currently sitting inside the wall safe of Victoria’s temporary apartment."

I stood up, adjusting the cuffs of my blazer. My mother’s apartment. The woman who had enabled Richard’s greed every single step of the way, who had stood by while her husband tried to destroy both of her daughters for a handful of cash.

"Then let's go pay our dear mother a visit," I said, my voice as cold as winter steel.
