Chapter 20 - The Unseen Envelope

The text message was from an unsaved number, accompanied by a single photograph of a plain white envelope resting on a wooden park bench.
I opened the image.
Typed neatly across the front of the envelope were my name and my exact downtown address. There was no return address, no postmark stamp, and no digital metadata attached to the file.
Beneath the photograph was a short, cryptic text message:
*“You closed their accounts, Myriam. You destroyed their empire. But you forgot about the safety deposit box in Zurich registered under Grandfather Henry’s original maiden name. And someone else just claimed it.”*
My breath hitched slightly in my throat. I stared at the screen, a sudden chill running down my spine as the silence of the room seemed to deepen around me.
Julian, noticing the sudden change in my posture, walked over from the kitchen, wiping his hands on a linen towel. He looked down at my phone screen, his sharp eyes narrowing instantly as he read the message.
"Who sent this?" Julian asked, his voice dropping to a low, protective register.
"I don't know," I whispered, looking up at him as the city lights flickered across the skyline outside my window. "The Zurich vault... Grandfather never mentioned a Zurich vault to anyone except..."
Before I could finish the sentence, my phone chimed again in my hand.

A second photograph flashed across the screen. It was a close-up shot of the interior of the safety deposit box. Inside, resting on a velvet cushion, was a single, old-fashioned brass key—and a handwritten note bearing Grandfather Henry’s unmistakable, looping signature.
Julian and I exchanged a long, intense look as the heavy front lobby buzzer of my building suddenly rang out into the quiet night.
