Chapter 21 - The Echo of the Zurich Vault

The harsh, metallic buzz of the lobby intercom pierced the heavy silence of my condo, vibrating through the dark wood floors and rattling the decorative glass vase on the entryway table. Julian didn't flinch. His muscles immediately coiled with the coiled tension of a trained predator, his hand automatically dropping to shield me as he stepped in front of my line of sight to the door. The city lights outside my floor-to-ceiling windows cast long, eerie shadows across the living room, painting the scene like a still frame from a psychological thriller.

"Stay behind me, Myriam," Julian commanded, his voice a low, gravelly baritone that left no room for argument.

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. My mind raced backward through every ledger, every audit, every legal trap we had meticulously laid to dismantle the Prescott family’s toxic empire. We had stripped my mother of her social standing, frozen my treacherous younger sister Victoria’s trust funds, and banished them from the high-society circles they desperately manipulated. But Grandfather Henry—the brilliant, calculating patriarch who had built the original Prescott fortune—had apparently left one final, well-guarded secret buried deep within the Swiss Alps. And someone had just dug it up.

The intercom buzzed a second time, louder, more insistent, vibrating with a menacing urgency.

"Answer it," Julian said quietly, his eyes fixed on the peephole. "Let's see who has the audacity to knock on your door at midnight holding a key to your family's past."

I swallowed the lump in my throat, walked stiffly across the room, and pressed the speaker button. "Who is it?" I demanded, trying to keep my voice steady, projecting a cold, unyielding confidence that I certainly didn't feel inside.

For a moment, there was only static and the faint sound of heavy breathing over the intercom speaker. Then, a voice spoke—distorted slightly by the digital filter of the lobby system, yet carrying a familiar, chilling arrogance that sent a freezing shiver straight down my spine.

"Open the door, big sister," Victoria’s voice hissed through the speaker, laced with a venomous, triumphant glee. "Or do I need to broadcast what’s inside Grandfather's Zurich box to every news outlet in Manhattan before the sun comes up?"

Julian's eyes flashed with pure fury. Without waiting for my permission, he reached past me, pressed the master release button, and pulled the heavy oak door open wide before the elevator even finished its ascent. We didn't have to wait long. The elevator doors slid open with a soft chime, and there stood Victoria, flanked not by our disgraced mother or our spineless relatives, but by a towering, unfamiliar man in an expensive, charcoal-grey tailored suit holding a sleek silver briefcase.

Victoria looked different. The polished, designer-clad socialite who had begged for money on my doorstep just weeks ago was gone. In her place stood a creature of pure malice, her eyes rimmed with dark kohl, a predatory smirk plastered across her heavily glossed lips. She stepped out of the elevator, her heels clicking sharply against the marble hallway floor, treating my penthouse foyer like she owned the entire building.

"Surprised to see me?" Victoria purred, sashaying past Julian as if he were nothing more than a coat rack. She didn't dare touch him, though; the cold, lethal aura radiating from Julian kept her at a respectful distance. "You really thought you won, didn't you, Myriam? You thought by locking down the domestic accounts and seizing the domestic properties, you had reduced us to nothing. But Grandfather Henry was smarter than both of us combined."

"You broke into a safety deposit box in Zurich," I said, my voice dropping an octave, freezing the air in the room. "That requires biometric verification or the original bloodline clearance protocol. How did you bypass the Swiss banking security?"

May you like

Victoria laughed—a sharp, shrill sound that echoed off the high ceilings. She turned to the imposing man in the charcoal suit, nodding toward him with an air of absolute superiority. "Allow me to introduce Mr. Alistair Vance. Legal counsel and international asset manager to entities that prefer to remain in the shadows. And more importantly... the man who executed Grandfather’s true final will."
