Chapter 18 - The New Foundation

The engagement was announced quietly through a tasteful press release that barely made a ripple in the gossip columns—which suited both of us perfectly. We didn't need the validation of high-society tabloids or country club galas. Our world was real, solid, and entirely our own.
One Sunday afternoon a week later, the sun was shining brightly over my downtown loft as I prepared a large, wholesome lunch for a very special guest. The smell of roasted rosemary chicken and garlic butter filled the air, mingling with the soft hum of jazz playing from the stereo speakers.
A knock sounded at the door.
When I opened it, Haley stood on the threshold wearing a simple, elegant sundress, her hair falling softly around her shoulders. She wasn't carrying heavy luggage or hiding behind thick makeup; she looked healthy, grounded, and genuinely happy. In her hands, she held a large ceramic bowl filled with fresh fruit.
"Am I early?" Haley asked with a nervous, hopeful smile.
"You're right on time," I said warmly, stepping aside to let her in. "Come on in. Julian is finishing up the wine pairings in the kitchen."
Haley walked into the living room, taking in the bright, open space filled with green plants and natural light. "It feels so peaceful here, Myriam. Every time I visit, it feels like the air is just... cleaner."
"That's because there are no secrets left to hide under the floorboards," I replied, handing her a glass of sparkling water as we walked over to the kitchen island where Julian was slicing crusty artisanal bread.
Julian looked up, offering Haley a warm, welcoming nod. "Glad you could make it, Haley. I hear your dental practice is expanding its patient roster."

"It is!" Haley beamed, setting the fruit bowl down on the counter. "In fact, the clinic director just offered me a permanent position as lead radiography technician with a full benefits package. I’m even starting to look at a small, cozy townhouse near the botanical gardens."
I smiled, feeling an immense sense of pride as I watched my younger sister blossom into an independent, confident young woman who earned everything she had with her own hands. The Prescott family name had once stood for greed, deceit, and hollow entitlement. But looking around this kitchen—with Haley thriving, Julian standing beside me as my equal partner, and our futures entirely secure—I knew we had finally rewritten our own legacy.
