Chapter 16 - The Aftershocks

The federal arrest of Richard Prescott sent immediate, explosive shockwaves through the upper echelons of the city’s corporate and social elite. Within hours of the tarmac takedown, morning news broadcasts were plastered with headlines detailing the downfall of the Prescott financial empire, exposing the shell companies, forged documents, and predatory schemes Richard had orchestrated over the past decade.
Victoria, realizing that her husband’s legal defense was entirely hopeless and that her own complicity would be scrutinized by federal prosecutors, agreed to a full plea deal. In exchange for immunity from prison time, she surrendered every remaining asset, bank account, and luxury property tied to her name, effectively wiping herself clean of any ill-gotten wealth.
I sat in my downtown loft on a crisp Tuesday morning, watching the financial news coverage while sipping a fresh cup of coffee. Haley sat across from me at the kitchen island, looking brighter, healthier, and more vibrant than I had ever seen her in her entire life.
"They revoked his bail," Haley said quietly, scrolling through a legal update on her smartphone. "The judge ruled that Richard is an extreme flight risk. He's being held at the federal detention center downtown awaiting trial. The prosecutors said he’s facing at least twenty years."
I set my mug down and offered her a gentle, reassuring smile. "Karma has a funny way of balancing the books, Haley. How is the clinic holding up? Did the state auditing board still show up on Monday?"
Haley beamed, her eyes shining with genuine pride. "They showed up, alright. But instead of arresting me, Julian’s legal team presented the emergency restraining order and the complete digital forensics report proving that Richard had fabricated the entire contract using my stolen social security information. The lead auditor actually apologized to me personally. My license is secure, my reputation is spotless, and my practice is fully operational."
"I'm so proud of you," I said, reaching across the counter to squeeze her hand. "You fought through the storm and proved your own strength."
My phone chimed on the marble countertop.
It was a text message from Julian: *“Case files closed. Federal prosecutors have secured all assets. Meet me at the botanical gardens in twenty minutes. I have a surprise for you.”*

I looked at Haley, raising an eyebrow with a knowing smile. "Duty calls."
"Go," Haley laughed, waving me off. "I have patient appointments anyway. Tell Julian I said hello!"
