Chapter 15 - Cornered on the Tarmac

The sports car drifted in a wide, controlled arc, kicking up gravel and burning rubber right in front of the nose cone of the massive private jet. The pilot inside the cockpit slammed on the emergency brakes, the aircraft's heavy turbines screeching in protest as it ground to a halt only yards away from Julian's vehicle.
Red and white warning lights flashed across the airfield as automated security alarms began to wail in the distance.
Julian cut the engine, the sudden silence inside the cabin contrasting sharply with the roaring whine of the slowing jet engines. Without hesitation, Julian pushed his door open and stepped out onto the tarmac, standing tall and imposing with his hands resting calmly at his sides. I stepped out right beside him, my blazer snapping in the fierce downdraft of the jet's remaining propeller wash.
The main cabin door of the private jet hissed open, and a mobile metal boarding staircase was automatically lowered down.
Out stepped Richard Prescott.
He was wearing an expensive cashmere overcoat, but his hair was disheveled, and his face was twisted in an expression of pure, unadulterated fury. He clutched a leather briefcase in one hand like a drowning man holding onto a piece of driftwood.
"Are you out of your absolute minds?!" Richard screamed over the noise of the idling engines, storming down the metal stairs until he was standing face-to-face with us on the tarmac. "You’re trespassing on federal aviation property! I will have you both arrested, sued into oblivion, and stripped of every penny you possess!"
I stepped forward, my gaze steady, cold, and entirely devoid of fear. I reached into my coat pocket and pulled out the black master USB drive, holding it up so the harsh floodlights caught its surface.
"Looking for this, Richard?" I asked, my voice carrying clearly across the tarmac.
Richard’s face instantly drained of all color. His eyes bulged as he stared at the flash drive in my hand, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. "How... how did you get that? That was encrypted with military-grade keys!"
"Your arrogance is your fatal flaw, Richard," Julian spoke up, his deep voice dripping with absolute contempt. "You left your personal IP address logged into the institutional server. You thought you could frame a young dental assistant and slip away to Switzerland like a coward. But your game is over."

Sirens wailed in the distance. Blue and red flashing lights began reflecting off the chain-link fence as three unmarked federal interceptor vehicles crashed through the main security gate, their tires squealing to a halt all around the jet. Armed federal marshals spilled out of the cruisers, weapons drawn and ready.
"Richard Prescott," a federal agent called out over a loudhailer, stepping forward with a pair of steel handcuffs gleaming in his hand. "Step away from the aircraft. You are under arrest for corporate fraud, international money laundering, and systemic identity theft."
