Chapter 11 - The Shadow Over the Clinic

The morning sun cast long, golden beams across the hardwood floor of my newly renovated downtown loft, but the quiet peace of the previous week was abruptly shattered by a sharp, aggressive banging on my front door. It wasn't the polite knock of a courier or the familiar tap of Julian; it was the frantic, heavy pounding of someone in absolute panic.
I set down my coffee mug, my brow furrowed as I walked across the living room. When I pulled the door open, I didn't find my mother, Victoria, or my scheming stepfather, Richard. Instead, standing on my threshold was my younger sister, Haley, her face pale, her breathing shallow, and her hands trembling violently. Gone was the calm, composed dental assistant who had texted me her certificate just days ago. In her place was a terrified young woman on the verge of total collapse.
"Haley? What on earth is wrong?" I asked, instantly pulling her inside and shutting the door against the cool morning draft. "Slow down. Breathe. What happened?"
Haley clutched a thick manila folder to her chest like a shield. Tears spilled over her eyelashes as she looked up at me, her voice shaking so badly the words barely formed. "Myriam... it’s not over. I thought we were safe. I thought when Mom and Richard lost the country club shares and the house was seized, it was finally over. But... but they’ve done something else. Something catastrophic."
My stomach dropped, a cold knot forming instantly in my gut. I guided her to the velvet sofa, pressing a glass of water into her shaking hands. "Tell me everything. Who did what?"
"It’s Richard," Haley choked out, taking a ragged sip of the water. "And... and someone he’s been secretly meeting behind Mom’s back. Two days ago, after the bankruptcy filings were finalized, Richard transferred a massive liability onto my name. Not just debt, Myriam—fraudulent medical supply contracts for a shell company registered in my social security number. They’re coming to audit my clinic on Monday morning. If I can't prove I had nothing to do with it, I won't just lose my license; I’ll be arrested for corporate embezzlement."
Anger, hot and blinding, surged through my veins. Just when I thought Richard Prescott’s depravity had hit rock bottom, he managed to dig a deeper, filthier trench. He had used Haley as a scapegoat—a final, vindictive insurance policy designed to ruin the one clean thing my sister had managed to build for herself.
"He wouldn't dare," I whispered, though I knew damn well he would dare anything to save his own skin.
"He already did," Haley sobbed, opening the manila folder and spreading out a dozen pages of forged signatures, corporate bylaws, and liability waivers. "Look at the dates, Myriam. They forged my signature while I was sitting my state board exams. They needed a clean, unblemished record to attach to the shell company so the real perpetrators could slip away internationally."
At that exact moment, my phone rang. It was Julian. I swiped the screen and put it on speaker, my voice hard as iron. "Julian. We have a code red."
"I know," Julian’s voice came through the receiver, calm, deep, and laced with a terrifyingly sharp edge. "My private investigators just flagged an offshore wire transfer originating from Richard’s personal accounts heading straight to the Cayman Islands. But that’s not all, Myriam. Richard didn't just target Haley. He filed a federal injunction freezing your entire portfolio, claiming Grandfather Henry’s original estate distribution was secured under false pretenses."
I stared at the paperwork trembling in my sister's hands, a fierce, unbreakable resolve settling over my chest. Richard thought he could corner us. He thought he could break Haley, terrorize me, and walk away with a fortune built on deception.

He had no idea who he was messing with.
"Haley," I said, placing my hand firmly over her cold fingers. "Pack a bag. You're staying here. Julian is sending his security detail to secure your apartment. On Monday morning, we aren't just going to defend your clinic. We are going to hunt Richard Prescott down, tear his little empire completely to ash, and make sure he spends the rest of his life behind bars."
