Chapter 8 - The Bearer Shares

The air in the boardroom seemed to vanish. The silence was absolute, thick with the terror of twelve corporate executives realizing the ship was sinking in real-time.
"You're bluffing," Arthur hissed, though his voice lacked its previous iron weight. "Even if Thorne talked, you cannot prove corporate culpability. Apex Global is insulated by fifty layers of offshore holdings. You can't touch my board seats, Emily. You can't touch my empire."
"I don't need to touch your empire through the courts, Arthur," I said calmly. I signaled Claire, who inserted the unmarked hard drive from Box 804 into the room’s main terminal.
The massive wall display flared to life.
A cryptographic ledger appeared, verified by the Swiss Federal Banking Commission. It displayed a forty-nine percent controlling block of Apex Global’s Class-A voting shares, registered under the name *Eleanor Bennett*—my mother.
Arthur Sterling sprang to his feet so violently his leather chair flipped backward, crashing against the floor-to-ceiling glass window overlooking the Manhattan skyline.
"Where did you get that?" Arthur roared, all composure disintegrating. "That trust was dissolved thirty years ago!"
"It wasn't dissolved," I replied, staring directly into his venomous eyes. "My father kept the bearer certificates in trust for me until my twenty-fifth birthday. Which was last week. Added to the three percent market shares I bought through secondary European funds over the last six years while you thought I was living in obscurity... I now hold fifty-two percent of Apex Global."
The board members gasped. One of the senior directors, a man who had known my father for forty years, covered his mouth in absolute shock.
"You don't just lose Bennett Holdings today, Arthur," I continued, my voice echoing with absolute authority. "As the new majority shareholder of Apex Global, my first official motion is to terminate Arthur Sterling as Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board, effective immediately, with cause."
"You little bitch!" Arthur lunged toward me, his face twisted in feral rage.
Before he could take two steps, Marcus Vance stepped between us, catching Arthur’s wrist in a vise-like grip that forced the billionaire to his knees with a sharp, sickening twist.
The boardroom doors opened again. Four agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, led by Assistant Special Agent in Charge Miller, walked into the room with handcuffs drawn.
"Arthur Sterling," Agent Miller announced, displaying his gold badge. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, corporate espionage, and federal wire fraud. Step away from the table."
As the agents locked the steel cuffs around Arthur’s wrists and hauled him toward the elevator, Arthur looked back at me, his eyes bloodshot, spitting words through gritted teeth.

"You think this is over, Emily? You think your father was an angel? You don't know what he buried in the Northstar hangars! You have no idea what you've just inherited!"
"What I inherited, Arthur," I said, watching him being dragged into the corridor, "is the strength to finish what he started."
