Chapter 39 - Whispers in the Vault

Victoria was trembling uncontrollably, her eyes darting between Clara’s pistol and the six disarmed operatives who had been forced to drop their sidearms onto the aisle carpet.

"Arthur... Arthur planned this?" Victoria stammered, her voice cracking with pure disbelief. "From the beginning? Even when he let me throw you out onto the tarmac? Even when he let Julian seize the offshore accounts?"

"My father had to know how deep the rot went," I said, watching Clara efficiently kick the weapons down the service hatch into the forward avionics bay. "He needed Julian to get ambitious. He needed you to become reckless. If he had stepped in while you were still cautious, the Core would have retreated into the shadows. You had to believe you were winning so you would expose the entire network."

"And you," Victoria whispered, horror dawning across her features. "You knew?"

"I didn't know," I confessed, stepping closer to her, looking down into her terrified eyes. "I bled for six years, Victoria. I froze on the baggage ramps. I endured your venom and your daughter’s laughter. But unlike you, pain didn't make me weak. It made me sharp."

I turned to Clara. "Where is this plane heading?"

"The transponder is routed to the high Arctic, ma'am," Clara said, keeping her weapon trained on the operatives lined up against the bulkhead. "Station Icefall. A private sovereign installation 800 miles north of Tromsø. It was Arthur Vance’s primary redoubt before Julian’s faction attempted to take it over."

"And who is waiting for us there?"

Clara lowered her eyes slightly, a shadow of solemnity crossing her face. "Not just your father, Emily. Your mother’s recovery pod was transferred there forty-eight hours ago."

The air rushed out of my lungs. My mother.

For fifteen years, I had believed she was dead—lost in a suspicious corporate plane crash off the coast of Greenland. The official narrative that had broken my childhood was that her body was never recovered from the freezing depths.

"She survived?" My voice was barely a whisper, the royal armor I wore cracking for a split second to reveal the grieving daughter underneath.

"She was placed in cryogenic stasis after the Greenland incident," Clara explained softly. "Her injuries were catastrophic, and the Sovereign Core was hunting for the data encrypted within her consciousness. Arthur kept her alive in the only place they couldn't breach without triggering a sovereign self-destruct. But her life-support matrix is failing. That’s why your father left the letter. The encryption key on that chip... it’s not just financial data, Emily. It’s the biometric sequencer for her stasis pod."

May you like

I looked down at the chip in my hand. It felt heavier than the world itself.
