Chapter 20 - The Sovereign Vault

The key slipped into the frozen cylinder with a precision that defied fifty years of mountain weather.

I turned it ninety degrees to the right.

A deep, mechanical click echoed from deep inside the mountain rock, followed by the hiss of pneumatic seals breaking after decades of silence. The heavy steel door groaned, its counterweights lifting tons of reinforced steel three inches off the concrete floor before swinging inward into complete blackness.

Marcus snapped a tactical flashlight onto his rifle rail, sweeping the interior.

The air smelled of ozone, dry hydraulic oil, and vintage paper—the unmistakable scent of undisturbed wealth. We stepped inside, the blast door slamming shut behind us under an automatic counterbalance, sealing out the howling alpine blizzard.

Emergency halogen lights flickered overhead, humming to life one by one down a three-hundred-meter corridor lined with reinforced concrete pillars.

At the end of the corridor sat the central vault room of the Northstar Sovereign Repository.

Dozens of floor-to-ceiling server stacks were humming in suspended animation, their cooling units bathing the room in a neon-cyan glow. In the center of the chamber, resting on a pedestal of solid black marble, was an unnetworked terminal console flanked by three thick, leather-bound corporate registers.

"These aren't digital files that can be hacked or deleted," Marcus breathed, stepping closer and examining the servers. "This is an air-gapped sovereign registry. The entire founding charter of the Atlantic Alliance, along with the original bearer certificates of Northstar Aviation."

I approached the marble pedestal. Laid beside the terminal was an old, handwritten envelope with my name penned across the front in familiar, elegant handwriting.

My hands trembled as I tore open the seal.

*Emily,* the letter read.
