Chapter 49 - Bloodline Severed

At 60,000 feet, the sky was a deep, velvet indigo, almost black, speckled with cold, unblinking stars. Beneath us, the white curvature of the Earth stretched toward the Arctic horizon.

"Speed Mach 2.4 and accelerating," Clara announced, her fingers dancing over the tactical radar array. "Intercept in four minutes. The escort fighters haven't even registered our radar cross-section. Stealth envelopes are holding."

"Keep us low in their radar blind spot beneath their belly," Arthur instructed, his voice steady over the intercom. "The *Valkyrie* has a ventral parasite docking collar designed for emergency diplomatic shuttles. If you match her airspeed to within two knots, we can lock directly onto her lower cargo bay without depressurizing her hull."

"Two knots at five hundred miles per hour," I chuckled grimly. "Just a standard Tuesday in Economy."

"Don't get cocky, Captain," Clara warned, her screen flashing yellow. "The escort fighters just broke formation. They've detected our wake turbulence! They're swinging around for an intercept!"

On the heads-up display, four red chevrons blossomed across the radar screen. The MiG-29s were diving into an offensive pincer movement, their targeting radars attempting to lock onto our heat signature.

"Fox Two incoming!" Clara yelled. "Two heat-seeking missiles launched from lead bandit!"

"Hold on," I said calmly.

I pulled the flight stick hard left, cutting the scramjet fuel intake for a split second while kicking the rudder to the extreme limit. The *Phantom-X* violently slid through the thin upper atmosphere in a high-G flat-spin drift, deploying a cloud of magnesium flares that blossomed into a blinding curtain of fire behind us.

The missiles slammed directly into the flare decoy, detonating in twin spheres of orange fury that illuminated the indigo void.

Before the escort fighters could recalibrate, I re-engaged the afterburners. The interceptor snapped forward with monstrous acceleration, rocketing directly through the center of the fighter formation. The sheer kinetic shockwave of our Mach 3 bypass sent two of the enemy MiGs tumbling out of control in turbulent stall spins.

"Bandits three and four breaking off!" Clara laughed, her adrenaline surging. "They can't match our climb rate! Target dead ahead!"

Through the frosted canopy of the *Phantom-X*, the colossal silhouette of the *Valkyrie* materialized—a flying city of titanium and stealth composites, its four massive turbofans trailing faint contrails in the freezing stratosphere.

"Docking collar deployed," I announced, easing the stick forward, lining our crosshairs up with the glowing yellow alignment lights on the belly of the leviathan. "Arthur, get the breach charges ready. We're going home."
