Chapter 6 - The Midnight Vault

The rain over Manhattan was relentless, washing over the black tinted windows of our motorcade as we pulled up in front of the Manhattan Gold Depository on Wall Street. It was nearly 3:00 AM, but the building was blazing with lights. Two armored SUVs from Vance Security were already parked curbside, their engines idling in the downpour.

The bank’s vice president, dragged from his bed in Westchester twenty minutes earlier by a federal subpoena signed by a magistrate judge, met us in the marble rotunda with trembling hands.

"Ms. Bennett... Mr. Vance," the man stammered, wiping water from his forehead. "We received the emergency injunction from the Southern District. The master vault has been unlocked."

We rode the heavy brass elevator four stories beneath the bedrock of Manhattan. The subterranean vault room smelled of ancient bronze, cold dust, and machine oil. Rows of gleaming steel deposit lockers stretched into the gloom like a stainless-steel labyrinth.

The manager led us down aisle eight, pointing a shaking key toward Box 804.

Marcus stepped forward with an electronic diagnostic kit, disabling the silent alarm switch before inserting the master key. I stepped up, punched the six-digit keypad code Madison had given me—0-9-1-7-4-2—and turned the secondary brass handle.

A heavy *clunk* echoed through the vault.

The steel door swung outward. Inside sat a single black velvet lockbox and an unmarked external hard drive wrapped in waterproof plastic.

I reached inside and lifted the velvet box, opening the latch.

My breath caught in my throat.

Inside lay my mother’s platinum diamond choker—the one Patricia swore had been lost during the estate auction three years ago. Beneath it was a leather-bound notebook written in my father’s unmistakable, sharp handwriting.

I opened the notebook to the final entry, dated five days before his death.

*“If Emily is reading this, then my worst fears have come to pass. Patricia has brought Julian into the inner sanctum. I have noticed the bitter almond aftertaste in the saline drip Nurse Evelyn prepares each evening. My hands are too weak to dial the authorities, and Julian controls the household staff. But an old fox does not die without setting his snare.*

*Emily, my darling, Bennett Holdings was never just an airline or a shipping conglomerate. We hold thirty percent of the trans-Atlantic satellite communication grid—the very grid Arthur Sterling needs to finalize his global defense contract. Julian is merely Arthur’s hound. The real weapon against them is not in the banks. It is in the corporate charter of Apex Global itself.*

*I bought forty-nine percent of Arthur Sterling’s holding company under your mother’s maiden name thirty years ago. The bearer shares are encoded on the drive beneath this book. You do not just inherit Bennett Holdings tonight, Emily. You own Arthur Sterling.”*

My fingers gripped the leather edge until my knuckles turned white. Hot tears stung my eyes, but behind the tears, a blazing fire of cold, calculating fury ignited.

"Marcus," I said, my voice cutting through the vault's cold air like a razor.

"Yes, Ms. Bennett?"

"Call Claire Montgomery. Tell her to convene an emergency plenary session of the Bennett Holdings Board of Directors for 7:00 AM sharp."

"The board members are scattered across the country, ma'am. Half of them are loyal to Julian."

"Then tell them," I said, closing the leather journal and sliding the encrypted hard drive into my inner pocket, "that if they are not in the boardroom by seven, their names will be forwarded to the SEC and the Federal Bureau of Investigation by seven-fifteen."
