Chapter 23 - The Crimson Horizon

The mercenaries outside the inner door lowered their weapons instantly. They were professionals; the moment Victoria’s bank accounts flashed zero and their escrow payment failed to clear, their loyalty dissolved like ice in boiling water.

"Ma'am," the mercenary commander said, his voice flat through the intercom microphone. "The contract is void. Your funds are frozen. We are withdrawing before Swiss Federal Police reach the perimeter."

"You coward! I hired you to finish her!" Victoria shrieked, clawing at the commander's tactical vest. "Shoot through the door! Kill her!"

The commander shoved her aside with cold disdain, turning on his heel and leading his men back toward the dark mountain exit, leaving Victoria standing alone in the flickering halogen glare, shivering in her ruined designer coat.

Marcus lowered his rifle, letting out a long, ragged exhale. "It’s over, Emily. The DOJ just confirmed receipt of the alliance files. Northstar is yours. Every plane, every terminal, every dollar."

A heavy silence settled over the subterranean vault, broken only by the steady, triumphant hum of the recovered servers. I felt the crushing weight of six long years of mockery, poverty, and grief lift from my chest. I had beaten them. I had stood in the dirt, taken their insults, and reclaimed my father's throne from the shadows.

I stepped toward the heavy vault release lever to open the inner door and face my stepmother face-to-face.

Then, the master terminal emitted a sharp, rhythmic ping that made Marcus freeze in his tracks.

The audio automatically routed through the vault speakers.

"Well done, Emily," a voice spoke. It wasn't my father. It wasn't Victoria. It was a smooth, cultured, aristocratic voice that carried the terrifying weight of absolute power. "You eliminated the domestic distractions for us. You unlocked the sovereign vault we couldn't breach without your blood."

On the primary radar screen, twelve tactical transponders suddenly blinked into existence directly above the Geneva terminal airspace—heavy gunships bearing no national insignia, descending through the storm clouds with lethal speed.

"Now, Miss Vance," the voice continued with chilling politeness as the concrete bunker began to tremble violently beneath our boots, "let us discuss the real price of your father's throne."
