Chapter 37 - The Ghost at the Controls

I didn't let my expression change by even a fraction of a millimeter.

"The Arctic," I thought, connecting the dots in an instant. The Core wasn't flying to Singapore. Singapore was the decoy manifest filed with international aviation authorities. The real destination was the Svalbard Sovereign Facility—the subterranean vault system my father had designed during the Cold War to house high-value assets outside any nation's jurisdiction.

"You seem thoughtful, Emily," Victoria said, swirling her champagne with forced elegance. "Realizing that your little victory parade ended the moment those tires left the runway?"

"I’m wondering how much they promised you," I replied smoothly. "When Julian took the fall, you were left with nothing. The Core doesn't keep liabilities around, Victoria. You know their doctrine better than anyone. Why would they give you a seat on this flight when you've already failed them twice?"

Victoria’s smirk faltered for the briefest fraction of a second. "I brought them the key."

"What key?"

"The Bearer Ledger," she said, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "The one you thought you secured in the Geneva vault. Julian was clumsy, but I made a clone of the digital encryption core before you stormed the boardroom. The Core doesn't need your cooperation. They just need your retinal pattern to unlock the primary depository. Once we touch down on the ice sheet, you are purely biological spare parts."

"A clone?" I let out a soft, genuine laugh that echoed mockingly through the cabin.

The six operatives glanced at each other. The commander's brow furrowed.

"What is so funny, you insolent child?" Victoria spat.

"You always were incompetent when it came to technology," I said, sliding the encrypted holographic chip out of my pocket and turning it between my fingers under the bright cabin light. "My father didn't use digital keys for the Sovereign Core. He used quantum-entangled holographic architecture. Any attempt to clone the data without the original crystal matrix causes an automatic phase-scramble. The file you handed to them... is empty garbage. White noise."

Victoria froze. Her glass hovered midway to her lips.

"Tell me, Commander," I said, addressing the scarred operative directly. "Did your handlers verify the ledger's decryption before we took off from New York? Or did they tell you that the validation would occur at checkpoint Alpha?"

The commander pulled a secure tactical transponder from his tactical vest. A series of red error codes flickered across its micro-screen.

His cold eyes snapped toward Victoria with sudden, lethal intensity.

"Madam Vance," the commander said, his voice dropping into a dangerous baritone. "The secondary uplink from Zurich just failed. The key is rejected."

Victoria’s face drained of every ounce of color. "No... that's impossible! Julian swore the extraction was clean!"

May you like

"Julian was an idiot," I said, rising smoothly to my feet. "And you, Victoria, have just flown yourself into a trap at forty thousand feet."
