Chapter 53 - The Apex Horizon

Evelyn fell against the glass, her breath coming in ragged, terrified gasps. The arrogance, the smug laughter, the ten years of calculated cruelty—all of it had crumbled into ash.
"Lucas... please," she begged, tears cutting channels through her expensive foundation. "I gave you a home. I took care of your father when he was sick! We can split the holdings! You can have the airlines, just let me keep the defense portfolio!"
"You poisoned my father," I said, my voice dropping to a deadly whisper. "You put my mother in an induced coma to steal her life's work. You don't get a portfolio, Evelyn. You get a federal penitentiary."
Behind me, the conference room doors swung open again.
Arthur Vance walked in, upright, holding his cane with steady, resolute dignity. Beside him, leaning weakly against his arm but walking under her own power, was Eleanor Vance. Her dark eyes were bright with consciousness, filled with a fierce maternal fury that caused Evelyn to physically shrink into the corner.
"Eleanor..." Evelyn whimpered.
"Get away from my son's chair, Evelyn," Eleanor said, her voice clear, calm, and sovereign.
Two of Arthur's personal loyalists entered and dragged Evelyn away from the window, fastening heavy steel cuffs around her wrists. The global board members erupted into simultaneous applause and frantic shouts of support as Arthur re-assumed the chairmanship on the live international feed.
"This board meeting is adjourned," Arthur announced to the world. "Vance Aerospace remains under the sole leadership of my son, Lucas Vance."
I looked at my mother, who stepped forward and wrapped her arms around my neck, holding me with a strength that defied her years of captivity. The war was won. The family was whole. The empire was ours again.
Suddenly, the *Valkyrie’s* master alarm sounded three sharp, piercing chimes.
The aircraft lurched violently to the port side, the autopilot disengaging with a shrill warning horn.
Clara’s voice crackled frantically through my tactical earpiece:
*"Lucas! Get to the cockpit right now! We have an emergency!"*
I broke away from my mother's embrace, drawing my sidearm once more as I sprinted through the forward access tunnel to the flight deck.
I kicked open the armored cockpit door. The two flight crew members lay slumped over their controls, unconscious from a fast-acting airborne neurotoxin that had leaked through the cabin air system.
Outside the cockpit windshield, flying in tight, terrifying formation alongside us at 48,000 feet, was an unmarked, pitch-black aircraft three times larger than the *Valkyrie*—a colossal flying fortress with no wings, hovering on pure anti-gravity propulsion.
The main cockpit radio crackled alive with a voice that was neither Evelyn’s nor Victoria’s, but a deep, aristocratic voice that sounded ancient and utterly omnipotent:
*"Well done, Lucas Vance. You eliminated our most troublesome pawn. But Evelyn was merely the steward of our lower vault. Now that you hold the Sovereign Tier-One key, the true Apex Council would like to invite you to our table. Do not attempt to turn this aircraft around... or we will vaporize it before you reach the horizon."*

On the primary radar screen, four glowing red target locks settled onto our cockpit windows.
My hand gripped the flight yoke, my eyes narrowing at the impossible shadow hanging in the Arctic dawn.
