Chapter 24 - The Apex Arbiter

The reinforced blast doors groaned under the sudden atmospheric shockwave as the first gunship touched down on the tarmac above. Dust rained from the raw granite ceiling of the Swiss bunker, dusting Marcus’s tactical vest and coating the glossy glass of the server consoles. Through the thick bulletproof glass of the inner partition, I could see Victoria slumped against the damp stone corridor, clutching her shredded mink coat like a broken child, abandoned by her own mercenary escorts.
"Who are you?" Marcus demanded into the comms terminal, raising his sidearm toward the reinforced ceiling as if he could pierce through two hundred feet of solid alpine rock.
A soft, aristocratic laugh hissed over the satellite link. "A business partner your late father neglected to introduce you to, Emily. My name is Julian Sterling. For twenty years, your father’s airline provided the global transit grid for our syndicate. Northstar was never just an airline—it was the sovereign spine of our logistics. When your father grew a conscience and threatened to hand the keys to international regulators, he had to be… retired."
The air in my lungs turned to liquid ice. Retired. They didn't just assassinate him; they engineered his ruin, used Victoria’s petty greed as an internal wedge, and orchestrated my exile into economy class and corporate servitude to keep Northstar fractured while they searched for the vault.
"Victoria thought she was stealing Northstar for herself," I said, my voice cutting through the speaker system with venomous clarity. "She thought she was playing chess."
"Victoria is a vulgar peasant who married well," Julian Sterling replied with chilling amusement. "A woman whose ambition never extended beyond business-class upgrades, diamonds, and humiliating her stepdaughter with petty baggage chores. We let her play her little game because it kept the board distracted. We needed someone with your father's true biometric DNA to trigger the master ledger override. You did that for us, Emily. Your blood unlocked what ten thousand brute-force cyberattacks could not."
On the tactical monitor, the twelve red transponders converged around the private terminal perimeter. Geneva airport was being sealed off by private military contractors operating under diplomatic immunity seals.
Marcus grabbed my arm, his knuckles white. "Emily, we have less than four minutes before they breach the ventilation shafts with thermite charges. The DOJ files are sent, but if they kill us down here, the master encryption keys die with you. They’ll seize Northstar through probate fraud by tomorrow morning."
I looked down at the master console, then at the heavy steel wheel of the vault blast door. Outside, Victoria was screaming at the security camera, pounding her bleeding fists against the reinforced glass, begging for someone to save her from the encroaching shadows.

"We aren't dying down here, Marcus," I whispered, slamming my father's sovereign USB key into the auxiliary port. "My father didn't build an empire just to let a parasite in a bespoke suit steal it. Let’s show Mr. Sterling what Northstar's real contingency looks like."
