Chapter 35 - Blood on the Alpine Express

Zurich in late autumn was shrouded in gray mist and the scent of rain-soaked limestone. The headquarters of Helvetia Private Trust stood like a monolith of dark granite overlooking the Limmat River—a fortress disguised as a private bank, catering only to bloodlines whose fortunes were forged before nations existed.

Dressed in tailored black suits, Elena and I entered the bank’s subterranean atrium under the cover of a high-value private audit.

"Mr. and Mrs. Vance," the Chief Director, a gaunt man named Herr Vane, bowed slightly, though his fingers trembled against his crystal desk. "We did not expect the new heads of the Delacroix estate so soon after Victor’s... unfortunate demise."

"Save the pleasantries, Vane," I said, leaning over his mahogany desk, dropping the scorched brass cryptex directly onto his blotter. "You manage the dormant ledgers of the Levantine Compass. We want access to Vault 0-Zero."

Vane swallowed hard, glancing nervously toward the armed security guards standing by the reinforced glass doors. "Vault 0-Zero cannot be accessed by money or legal deeds, Mr. Vance. It requires the dual biometric handshake. Victor’s cipher... and the child's registry."

"I brought the child's data," Elena said calmly, setting down an encrypted Vance-tech drive. "Now open the blast gates."

Vane had no choice. With four of our undercover operatives positioning themselves silently in the executive corridor, he led us down three levels into the mountain-vault system beneath the riverbed.

The steel vault door was eight feet thick, featuring the familiar dual-headed serpent cast in heavy platinum. Vane entered the master override, and I slotted the encrypted drive into the biometric terminal.

The heavy locks disengaged with a sound like thunder echoing through a canyon.

The vault hissed open.

Inside, resting on a pedestal of black obsidian, was not a pile of gold or stock certificates. It was a single, illuminated tactical terminal displaying a live global map of commercial shipping corridors, along with a sleek satellite comm-link that had just connected to our presence.

Before we could take a step inside, the bank’s alarms wailed with deafening intensity.

*Red lockdown initiated.*

"Ethan!" Elena shouted as Herr Vane suddenly lunged backward, hitting an emergency wall switch to seal the vault doors and trap us inside!
